A Warning...watch yer fingers (for Dummies)

Those mandolin slicers can be pretty dangerous though I've always had good results by cutting slow and using the large end of a wooden mallet to push food through. However I've had a few other costly lapses in judgement:

Once while cooking up a meal for 20 of my friends who were coming over for a church small group I managed to cut off the first 1/8" from my thumb on my fretting hand. Thank God I missed the bone but there was blood all over the scrambled eggs, baked apples and sausage hashbrowns that I'd been cooking for the last three hours. $200 of pizza saved the day for my friends but it took about two hours for my thumb to stop bleeding and it made playing bass or guitar for te next month a bit challenging to say the least.

Another time my nephew came to hang out with me over the weekend (I'm that crazy, wild fun uncle that parents don't entirely approve of) and I somehow managed to slam my pinky finger of my plucking hand in my own car door. As I'm jumping up and down and screaming every obscenity I know (like Raphael in the original TMNT) in the middle of a downtown Chicago street my nephew is on the sidewalk, doubled over laughing. After six weeks of scraping the dried blood out from underneath the fingernail with a needle (couldn't afford to go to the doctor and have the nail drilled) that pinky is noticeable larger than the other one.

I don't have any fear of mandolin slicers, framing hammers or other tools; usually my own stupidity is enough to hurt me and uses whatever is handy at the time.

OK... Finally I have enough new pink skin to play lightly for a few minutes at a time and try to build up some new callouses. Actually since I've been using thumb and pinky the last couple of months the pinkys gotten strong enough for a full 5 finger attack in a month or two...thanks for all the moral support....then there was the time I cut a 240 amp wire (which I thought was dead) with garden clippers but that's another story.
