A world without mind altering substances ?

My thinking is that people that use mind altering substances to deal with stress , depression etc would develop other coping skills if they couldent self medicate. For those that use it to celebrate or party they just might take to other activites like having more sex or playing bass to enjoy themselves.

This is true in theory, but that's the thing about mind altering substances, they alter one's perceptions without any input from the user except to sniff it or shoot it or whatever. Take that away and I think many former users wouldn't have the sheer willpower to cope on their own.

That would all be very well and good if people could consciously control the levels of neurotransmitters, uptake inhibitors etc. etc. in the brain.

I think mind altering substances have probably had a lot of benefits on the world. Some Scientists were famous for coming up with good ideas thanks to the use of LSD.

I think it would look great. Every time people opened their mouths rainbows would come out and things would be made out of chocolate and apples and every body of water would have surfable waves on it. Squirrels would deliver the mail and computers would give you a happy ending by simply pressing the "happy" button.

Seriously, it would just be boring.

What do you think a world without mind altering substances would look like ? I think over all many would be more emotionally mature in dealing with their issues.

Without mind altering substances there would be no anesthetics, hence no invasive internal surgery. Many people would be dying much earlier in life, kinda like the olden days, but even in the olden days they'd get you really drunk on whiskey before chopping off your gangrenous leg.

I tend to err more to the side of worry for people's who need it to control mental issues more than those who use it for recreation. to the former, they are must...to the latter, there are other ways to have "fun"... but not condemming you for enjoying it...
