Double Bass A year of double bass playing...

You might work on getting in and out of thumb position with your lines, instead of either/or. And the collapsing joints (hypermobility?) in thumb position might not be the healthies approach, technically.
Other wise, very nice! I wish, it could have played like that after just one year.
I begin to appreciate those strings, someone said that tape nylon strings were a waste of time...

I watch a lot of videos about bass playing, internet is great for that so... It's something normal.
I don't think I will go further in terms of technique. I will keep it simple but better.

I really like how relaxed you seem to be. You make it look easy.
If I must offer criticism, it would come down to your having to reach up so far for half position. It appears that it might be putting strain on your hand.
And - not criticism - I don't think I've ever seen a thumb that bends so far back from the last joint!

Thanks, in fact when I began to play the strings were too high, the endpin was sliding, etc.. But I had been able to play and learn.
When I modified the bridge things became easier and more with the stool and the rubber carpet.
If it looks easy because it is, compared to where I started.
Half position is kind of nightmare (maybe more angle would be better), tape strings don't help for intonation because they are more accurate than steel strings (just my feeling).
My hands don't suffer a lot, they don't suffer at all but I feel that half position is something else.
About my hands, I was made like this.
Do I play with others ? Yes I do when they come home... No problem.
Some people would like me to be their double bass player, in fact, what I do here is much more difficult than playing with others.
I mostly play the bass guitar in a big band and jazz guitar in duet and trio formulas (6 and 7 string guitar). So I can't have so many projects, I'm kind of busy with my job, the big band and other bands.
I could play the double bass in the big band but I'm scared they dig it and want me to play it instead of the bass guitar... My amp is heavy, my car is tiny...

Unfortunately, not a lot of double bass players have seen me playing for real since I buy my instrument (before I owned a double bass many of them encouraged me to play, they taught me kind of self-confidence and made me understand it wasn't a "big deal", you know these kind of people who say "Hey you, try my double bass ! Don't be afraid ! Put all your fingers on the fingerboard ! Yes you can do it that's OK for only few minutes but if you owned one you would make it very quickly !").
The other day, someone who apparently gigs a lot with his double bass made me try his bass, he said that I was doing things he has never been able to do.
It works a bit for very simple music (Slam Stewart words) like I play but for classical music, a whole life wouldn't be enough.

Some news, I played the double bass in the big band, everyone loved it.
I will also play in a jazz trio (piano, bass & drums) for a couple of gigs.
Sometimes I wish I started to play the double bass earlier.
I shouldn't have regrets, things came the way they came.
I've been playing jazz for more than thirty years, no matter if I have been playing the double bass for only a year, the most important thing is to make them believe I've been playing the double bass for thirty years.
In fact, it's just a tool.

A soprano singer wanted me to play the double bass, for fun I showed her I couldn't play with the bow.
She didn't understand the joke, I'm now her classical double bass player, simple stuff of course, nothing fancy.
I'm bowing now.
I hope it won't be a nightmare for the audience. I'm so scared !
