About those pick things...

I've never been able to get a pick to sound halfway decent, I love the attack they have but hate the highs they ad.

Until now. Has anyone else ever used....a paper football??

Seriously. I rip a piece of paper about 2 inches wide, fold that in half, and fold it into a football, then put a bit of tape on the end to keep it together better.

Perfect tone! Like fingers with just a bit of extra highs, enough to tolerate, and most of that picky thump. And dropping picks used to be a huge problem for me, when I bothered to mess with them. No more! It's big enough to stay in my clumsy mitts and doesn't slip at all.

Only downside, I basically have to make a new one every rehearsal. And I still suck at playing with a pick.

A guy at Guitar Center tried to sell me these picks they had that were made of a thick felt-like material that were pretty stiff, but sounded more like fingers. Personally, my response was "What's the point? I've got fingers if I want to sound like fingers, and if I'm using a pick, it's because I want it to sound like a pick." Your situation, however, seems like one where it would make sense.

Try playing with either rubber or felt picks. They kill some of the harsh high end pick playing can impart. I'm a 100% pick player, and use the rubber picks when I want to make the tone a little rounder-the sound produced is somewhere between regular picks and fingers.

Even with regular picks, if you use thicker ones, there will be less snap and highs. Try the 3-mm Dunlop Triangle Stubby... I have a whole bunch of them, as they used to be my go-to pick and I always lose picks, but I've since changed to other ones for more bite and highs.
