AccuGroove mini review Tri-112 & 115

And I was blessed to have at my disposal, these two cabs.
All I will say about this is, they were presented to me with the understanding that if/when I am finished with them, they are to be turned over to the Musicians Fund for either sale or to be passed onto the next guy/gal who is in need. Or, in my case, pay for them when we are able (thats a decision my wife and I made, not something that was handed down to us). QUOTE]

This is where I got the idea Big Mike that AG was letting Mike to try out the cabs.:hiding: :p

Yeah, Mike was trying not to let the cat out of the bag as to exactly what Mark had done. He even tries to not mention who it was exactly.

Just Mike being humble.

Well, it's true.
They were given to me.
There I said it now let the ones who want to flame go ahead and get it over with. (I don't mean you Mac, there are ones here for whatever reason, have it out for AG)

Mark didn't want/expect/need anything from me regarding the cabs.

Like I said in my above post, my wife and I will make good or "pay it forward" when we can. Because it's the right thing to do. Not because we were told to.

But enough about the "how".

They sound good. Plain and simple.
I'm a picky S.O.B. and I wouldn't say a thing about them if they didn't measure up.

SO, Mike, 112 vs 115, which would you pick as a stand alone cab? I don't think I'd ever need two...

The crappy thing about this thread is that it's made me start looking at these things. The 112 and 115 are more affordable than I thought they'd be. Dangit. Where's teh bean-0!

It'd almost be cheaper I think to go with the two cabs rather than one El Whappo.

While I have never personally spoken with Mike I have interacted enough with him online to have a sense of his level of integrity. I firmly believe that this thread would not even exist if he did not in fact believe every word that he's said about the AG cabs.

Thats funny that you mentioned that.
Mike W and I were just talking about that eariler. I have a quiet(er) gig next week where either the 112 or 115 would do just fine.

I used the 112 at a few rehersals and it was way perfect. But I'm gonna take the 115 out by itself to see how it does.

They actually sound a LOT alike. The 115 just sounds a bit "bigger". But the 112 sounds like it has more low punch.
But this is very small differences mind you.

You gotta remember though, this is not an "Eden" like cab. Think and hear differently when using these. The EQ just became useful on your amp.

Thanks for the kind words Joel. They mean a lot.

I gig.
I play my gear live.
If it can't cut it, I don't have time (or patience these days!) to explain to the band leaders why I'm fiddling with knobs all night and driving everyone crazy.

I know a few guys who are "armchair" bassplayers out there. Rest assure that these things are getting used and not just sitting in my basement being dissected and looked at. Well, I do go down and stare at them, but thats another story!

I love Don and the guys at Low Down Sound (LDS) for example. They make their own cabs. Some great and some need to be chucked faster than a rented mule. And I tell them that.

I also just got some encouraging news (if you want to call it that) that could make for a great 07'. Bringing me to a bunch of cities gig wise. Big gig wise. As long as my health holds up.
Nothing in stone yet, but good vibes/conversations none-the-less.
Don't ask, 'cause I don't want to jinx myself!!!:D

And the AccuGrooves will be going out with me. I wouldn't tour, big or small, with something that couldn't cut it.

Just don't forget us "little peeps" when you make the big time. I'm not looking for an entourage type scenario. Nope, I'm easy to please. All I want is backstage passes and field testing privileges* for the groupies. Good Luck, on this Mike, I do hope it works out. Your one of the three or four guys I know personally who really has the chops and demeanor too go somewhere with this thing. Just don't go getting all West Bloomfield on us!

*The field testing thing doesn't apply if your playing a "Service Club":D
(not that theirs anything wrong with that)

awesome news, mike... there'll be a nice cold one waiting for you in NYC.

I was able to hang with Mike F last week for an hour and a half, and he showed me those cabs. Mike, like many of you, has owned just about EVERYTHING out there, so I always call him for his opinions on gear for various situations, reliability, etc. Those cabs DO sound really good, and definitely different from my limited amp/cab experience. Certainly clear, full, loud, (things were shifting a bit upstairs at his house) and oddly uncolored (for my ears, - my former rigs: Trace, GK/Hartke, now Eden) So, you put a great bass with a great amp w/basic EQ and I think you have a wise choice of cabinets. I need to hear them live , now that those speakers have broken in a bit more, but at the same time, it is sometimes easier to deal with what you can't have, if you never really get to experience it ! That consitent sound, clarity with LESS volume, and tone retention in a mix of instruments has truly gotten me intrigued; I should just stay home....

A litte update!

Used my Tri-112 & Tri-115 on the gig last night. The band usually plays nice and loud. In the past one of my Epi UL112's wouldn't cut it with these guys. I tried before and was left miserable all night long. Not that it sounded bad, just not loud enough.

Anyway, after our first set last night (which we didn't play loud at all) the bar was kind slow. So, in all my wisdom gained from the first sets volume level and taling to the guitar player (who's band it is) I asked "We're really not gonna get any louder than the first set are we?" to which I got "Heck no, we're gonna take it easy and just have a smooth night".

Cool!!!
So to help my load out, I took the Tri-115 out to the van.
Now thinking all I had to do was pack my AI Focus in it's little bag, coil up a few cords, pick up my pedals and stick them along with my strap and stuff them in the front pocket of my gig bag........heck!! One trip out of the bar, toss the stuff in the van and away I go!!

Well, the bar picked up a bit and they got loud.
So, here I am standing there midway through the first tune thinking "Cripe!!! Shoulda kept the other cab in here!!"
Funk/R&B with a little rock thrown in BTW.

Well, I reached down to turn up the amp and Holy Mother of Michael Manring did that little cab get freaking loud!!!!

The drummer commented in between tunes about how really there wasn't much difference in volume with just the one cab comparred to when I bring both (I've played with them in this club a few times before) he could hear me just as well as always.

A buddy of mine (former NFL player Larry Lee) was at the club and he commented how clean and loud the cab was.
He sat in (he's a great player BTW, and I got to hold his SuperBowl ring when he was playing!!:D ) and loved how the cab performed.

When I was walking around I was shocked how well it filled up the room (no PA support BTW- just vox and a little kick in the PA).

Mike and all who are digging the Accugroove thing. I purchased the tri110L and the tri112L. I have the 10 and am running it with a Thunderfunk. The 12 has not arrived. Just with the 29lb. 10" though I feel very encouraged by the highs. Most cabs my ear hears an attempt at pushing highs out as what I would describe as a colored boost. The first I came across with silk tweeters in a cab that (the now defunct Talon Audio) was building to enter the pro sound market (I was testing it for them for bass application). There was an eveness to the spectrum that I would compare in my experience to a bass with open notes that sound like they belong to the fretted ones. They never finished the cab for me and the experience was frustrating, because I simply did not think I would find a cab with this quality. The specs on the test were 1X15" with a silk tweeter rated I believe at 200 wrms bringing the cab to an unbelievable 1200wrms. Talon built home speakers that would sell in $7500.00-$100000.00 if memory serves. Well, the accugrooves in my opinion meet this standard, to my ear, of delivering a response that seems, imho to belong in the category of eveness. The entire spectrum seems even, smooth and delivers close to what I put into it. What do I know though. I just like them.

talonaudio.com is now talon loudspeakers. I will never play through a single cab in my lifetime that is as loud as the talon test model. In fact I will never hear a home theater system like the one they exposed to my ears. I just don't have the scratch. However until Talon decides to enter the market with this one cab does all and I mean all, I will play these Accugrooves.

Thanks Mark.

In agreement,
Russ

I was able to hear Mike's Tri 112 the other week up at LDS, and I must say that I liked its EQ'd tone very well. However, relative to its "untweaked" tone, I felt that it really benefitted from a heft bass boost and some midrange cut. Mike didn't seem to need any high end boost with his fingers and his playing style, but I did notice that when I played it, I needed the same kind of treble boost that I have come to expect from Accugroove cabs. So, while I did not care for its "flat" tone, I did like it a lot as tweaked. I would still like to compare the Tri 115/Tri 112 to my Whappo, Jr. some day!

Tom.
