Accurate Tuner for a 5-string

Damn, that's low. I run mine at 0.4mm (I guess that'd be like a 15 or 16).

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm trying to do metric now for my string height. Just easier to see for me. I think the B on my BTB is about 2 mm. Everything else is sloped down to about 1mm on the G.

Went ahead and decided to support their business. So, I have a brand new full sized ST-300 headed my way!

Gonna be useful in the studio and on the workbench, thanks to being able to be powered with a 9V battery.

You will not regret that purchase, the ST-300 is as good as tuners get.

ST-200 or ST-300?

I have the ST-200 but only because when I bought it, they hadnt released the 300 yet. My only gripe is that the display can get washed out in sunlight. but it sounds like the 300 has a brighter display. I'd probably go for the 300, based on that and the smaller size.

The ST-300 comes in two sizes, regular and mini. Also, there's a couple differences between the two.

Ah, I'm out of the loop. I cant imagine they made it less accurate in subsequent versions, so to me, knowing very little, I would think that something as accurate as my 200, in a smaller box, with a brighter display would be making a great thing even better. I use mine to do setups and intonation, and its crazy accurate. I mean, it is +/- .02 cents. The Peterson Strobostomp is .1. Thats a significant difference in accuracy. Maybe negligible to some, but if you want to do precision setup and intonation work....

A flageolet is a note played with a finger (or a pick) touching the string halfway (above the 12th fret). So not fretting it. By dividing the string in two equally long halves, a tone of twice the fundamental frequency is produced. Most tuners just work better with higher frequencies.

Translated: Tuning with harmonics.

I am so intrigued that I have to try this with my forthcoming Strobostomp. I think I will love having it always on. The Strobo looks really responsive, too, like you'd have to be playing at least 8th notes for it not to follow you. And you get the mute switch, too! I only have one misgiving: running in buffered bypass. It's probably a good idea for me. All in, I am typically running 24 feet of cable in addition to a six-pedal board. Probably do me some good.

The always on thing is really nice. Live, if you think you're hearing something funky, you can take a quick glance and verify that it's not you. I don't have my HD set to be 'always on' though it's an option...part of my board is a Boss ES-5, which has a dedicated tuner out spur. I have so many damn buffers on my board in different places (and also a preamp (or two) on the basses I use most, so I'm buffered to the hilt no matter what. You can always get a discrete little good sounding always on buffer that tucks under your board.

Glad I can help. There's a bunch of them out there in the standard 'mini' pedal size, but you can get even smaller. Ranging in price from ~$20 up to $200 depending on what you want. Truetone makes a good suspect at 50. I have one of these lil T1m around. Worried it'll screw with your vintage muff style fuzz...drop in in line behind that in your signal path.

I've got a MXR MC406 that's first in the pedal order and will be out-of-sight from now on.

And...I've got the Peterson Strobostomp HD on order (G.A.S strikes again). These aging eyes will appreciate the screen real estate!

So I'll have 2-buffered pedals at the start of the chain (MXR MC406 & Strobostomp HD), and one in the middle of the chain (All Things Equal - Southampton). The chain order was effective with the TC Polytune 3 and should be as well with the Strobostomp HD.

FWIW, I'm not getting rid of the TC Polytune 3 anytime soon. It will go on my smaller board I'm starting to piece together.

I still have my original Polytune and use it as my 'incidental' home tuner with a battery. My Peterson HD stays on my board, though I'd de-board it if I needed to do a fine-adjust on a bass' intonation. I also have one of the Polytune Mini's around and it's definitely not my favorite, it mostly sits on the island of misfit toys.

The KLIQ UberTuner is the best clip on for 5-string that I have found, and you can get them for about $20. I don't know why, but they do a a much better job of picking up the B string than any of the half dozen other clip on tuners I've tried.

I bought one of those and it's aweful. It rattles like crazy on the bass. $20 wasted. Garbage.

The regular-sized ST-300 can toggle either way, muted or pass through/always on. The ST-300 Mini is muted only.

One time (back in 1974) I was hanging out with the guys from Genesis; Mike had a flageolet (instrument) with him.

Some people use “Drop Tuning”, Jeff uses “Name Drop Tuning”.

All good tuners mentioned and I’ve used - I think - all of them. However...StroboStomp HD by far takes them all. Every day of the week, hour of the day, etc, in every category (unless you absolutely need a headstock tuner or a smaller pedal footprint).
