ACG onboard preamp (ACG/John East design)

It could be possible as the pre-amp with the filter fully shut down should provide a huge dub bass type sound and as it is a lowpass filter the bottom end is always present.
It might be worth having a look at the wiring yourself if you can. The installation instructions are on my website on the front page. If you down load them and just have a look to see every thing is as it should be it would do no harm.
Best to eliminate the easy stuff first then we can take it from there.

I double checked the wiring and everything looks proper. BTW, I experienced the feedback sound again today, this time with the amplifier volume on 1 and the low pass overshoot peak knob turned down to reduce gain. Just moving to hold the bass at a different angle set it off today, so maybe it is a pickup problem? However, it has only occurred when the low pass frequency knob is set to max position, so the preamp does seem to also be a factor. I wonder why nobody else has experienced this problem. Is it possible that having the internal pickup trimpots maxxed somehow makes it susceptible to feedback?

I'm no pickup expert, but it does sound to me like the pickups may be microphonic. The preamp may be a factor because certain settings boost frequencies that cause the pickups to resonate and squeal, but I suspect the underlying problem is the pickups themselves.

The new version of the 3K will not have a pot on the board we have moved away from that so that no version will have a pot mounted on the board. I am just waiting for the older stock to sell and the new stock to arrive then I will update the info on my site. BBG has not bought any new stock from me for quiet a while so the stock he has was paid for when the exchange rate was a lot less in your favour, but you would be best to take this up with Brian.

Is there (or will there be) anywhere else for USA residents to purchase the newer preamps besides BBG? Can we buy direct from ACG?

(I have nothing against buying from BBG, I'd just like to get this newest model.)

Hey everyone,

I was looking at replacing my pre amp with this one. The bass has 2 soapbar pickups and was wondering if I need to know the impendance of these before buying one.

Sorry for the delay I missed this post.
You don't need to worry about the impedance.

BBG is the only US stockist.
Brian has both versions just specify which one you would prefer.

Well, based -- exclusively, I must admit -- on the favorable responses in this thread, I took the plunge and ordered an EQ02 for my Modulus Quantum-6 SPX six string. It just arrived today. I'll post some feedback (ha-ha, no pun intended) after I install it and take it out for a spin.

So last night was the debut gig of my newly ACG-equipped Modulus.

Now I gotta admit, despite the fact that nearly every post in this thread has been of the "Wow! This Thing Is Amazing!" variant, I was not prepared to have that experience. A) I'm a hard guy to please, and B) my Modulus is kind of an odd bird tonally, and I really didn't expect any miracles.

But "Wow! This Thing Is Amazing!"

Not only was it very easy to get alot of cool & useful tones out of my bass that weren't available (either easily, or at all) before, but it basically overcame all of the shortcomings that I'd previously complained about with this bass' tone while preserving all the aspects of it that I liked!

I'm really impressed.

Here's a belated follow up on my experience using the ACG pre with Alembic pickups. Although I was VERY happy with the tone of the ACG, in the end I had to return it and get compatible electronics for my bass from Alembic. The output level with the ACG was simply too low for most practical applications with these pickups. I've been using the Alembic pre for a couple of weeks now, getting plenty of volume and no feedback problems.

BTW, tonally I would describe the Alembic pre as being punchier, a bit stronger in the low mids but lacking some of the high end detail that I was getting from the ACG. Both preamps sound great and extremely versatile, and overall I would say that I favor the tone of the ACG slightly, but given the compatibility problems I would advise against trying to use an ACG preamp with Alembic pickups.

Just one addition to the above post which I don't know if it is relevant with regard to the feed back. This has happened again and we were able to track down the problem. The pre-amp was installed in correctly by the tech and once this was sorted the feedback problem was solved. The surprising thing was that the pre-amp work at all. I don't know if this was the case with the Alembic pickups but thought I would mention it it being the only other case of feedback that has been reported to me. Should the opportunity arise to try out more Alembic pickups I will report my results, the one set we have used worked out very well but were probably not the same pickups used by B&B.

Coincidentally, I know the other customer who experienced feedback with the ACG, and he confirmed to me that it was fixed by reversing the wiring for his low pass filter. In my case, I double checked the wiring and it all matched the instructions, so I can only speculate as to why the bass was feeding back. No feedback problems so far with the new preamp, so as far as I can tell the pickups weren't faulty.
