ACG onboard preamp (ACG/John East design)

My bass is a Stambaugh so he did the install. But from what I understand it isn't a difficult process as preamps go. The B-301 would need an extra hole drilled though.

Love those basses. Such a great tone. And the original pickups were among the best they ever made. Fred Hammon says they are his second favorite after the Hagstrom Bi-Sonics that the Darkstars are based on.

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I was about to buy one of these preamps for my Jazz bass, when I came across a great deal on a Ric, so I traded the Jazz (plus cash) and got the Ric now.

I do still have my Guild B301 and its just sitting there gathering dust and I have been really wanting one of these preamps for a while now. Luck would have it, I recently came across a good tech that I am sure could handle the job if I decided to install one. I also still have my fretless Jazz as well...hmmm...what to do???

...make a difference in what way? It won't fix a floppy B string, no preamp can do that. It will give you more clarity and the ability to sculp the tone in a way you've not been able to do with the eq that you have in your bass now.

I originally got to hear this preamp with a Fender J. I couldn't believe the sounds that I could get out of that little Fender. I've never heard so many different ways to alter the J bass tone before.

Wait, if you just clip the old ground from the old pre-amp and run it into the ground terminal still grounded, isn't that avoiding a solder? Honestly, I'm probably clueless. Anytime I try to solder something I manage to screw something up.
Any word on the ease of Stingray installation? I'm pretty sure the single pickup version works just fine, I think the dual pickup one might be a bit screwy in that cavity with a knob hardwired on to the board, but again, I'm probably clueless :ninja:

And btw, why the $100ish price markup through bestbassgear?

The ground I am talking about is connected to the jack socket which needs the ground from the cavity and the bridge to be connected to it this assumes you use the new jack supplied. John is trying it out so I will let you know as soon as I know. The new version of the 3K will not have a pot on the board we have moved away from that so that no version will have a pot mounted on the board. I am just waiting for the older stock to sell and the new stock to arrive then I will update the info on my site. BBG has not bought any new stock from me for quiet a while so the stock he has was paid for when the exchange rate was a lot less in your favour,but you would be best to take this up with Brian.

So my new Stambaugh has the ACG but I don't have separate bass stacks for each pickup. Is that normal?

I have normal (non-stacked) knobs for volume and blend and then the stacked treble control and stacked bass filter that affects both the neck and bridge pickups.

I'm not complaining, as I dig it and keeps things a little simpler for me, but I'm wondering if this is a normal setup and also if I'm missing a lot because of it.

You have the EQ-02. That's the only one available outside of Alan's (ACG) basses. The EQ-01 has a filter for each pickup.

Gotcha. That makes a lot of sense as that seemed to be what I was seeing from others who installed it as an aftermarket pre but the PDF on the ACG site talks about filters for each pickup.

One more excuse (as if I needed another one) to buy an ACG bass I guess. ;)

Mr Jazz is right the 01 version does have the two filters one for each pickup and is only available in my own basses have to hold back something for my own stuff :).

There is a PDF on the front page about the EQ02. I hope to have the site updated and all the info on the pre-amps and clips all in the one place but that is not possible with my current site.

I just went to John with an idea of what I was looking for,the clever bit being going to John, he did the design stuff and made it what it is.

I bought the pre/eq for jazz bass from Alan and installed it in my bass today,i'm extremely impressed with the tonal variation you can get from this item,once you start to learn the workings of just what this is capable of i think you would never cease to find new sounds from it!!Alan was very helpfull when i asked him questions about the eq, and the fitting,my USA jazz bass 5 string sounds amazing!!i would certainly recommend this to anyone!!!thanks Alan,Julian.:)
