ACME LOW B-2? replace my 1x18?

I never checked the listed sensitivity for the Aguilar s210. In my limited experience up to this point, it is definitely louder than the acme, but it doesn't overpower it.

Yeah, I've got the Acme sitting on top of the Aggie right now. I don't hear THAT much difference, but I've yet to run them both at practice yet.

I bought the Acme (used) to see what the fuss was about and maybe use it as a "sub" a la the B-2W. That might still be the case, but I like the sound enough that I'm considering picking up a second. The hitch is that I really like the Aguilar/Peavey set up, too. Another Acme will require a new amp or adding a power amp to my head for a craptastic total weight of probably 70 lbs in amplification, assuming I go the cheap route.

I dunno...I'm still mulling it over. The Acme stays, for sure, but what part it plays in the future is undetermined.

There are a couple guys on here that have used the Acme as pa cabs... and regular hi-fi speakers too.

I have done both - I've used them as PA as well as monitors for a studio mix of some stuff we've recorded. I honestly like their overall balance better than my Mackie HR824 speakers with Mackie studio subwoofer... the bass seems more balanced whereas the Mackie studio sub can be a bit boomy at times. And yes, this is in a bass trap and broadband absorber/trapper treated room.

I want to make sure that I'm clear in what I'm saying when I describe the Acme cabinets. The Acme cabinets do NOT produce or add bass to a signal or sound source, whether it be bass guitar, keyboard, synth or program recorded music. It simply produces what is already present in the signal... similar to what a high quality subwoofer is supposed to do - not ADD bass, but produce the bass that is already present, for example in movie soundtracks and so forth.

To answer the OP's original question about the Acme vs an 18" woofer, the answer is the Acme wins. Woofer diameter does not determine bass output.
 
In the past I've done some non-scientific testing of my own with my old school Radio Shack dB meter and I'm able to easily obtain a 120dB A-weighted reading by feeding pink noise from a single Acme Low B2 4-ohm unit from a 500-watt per side PA amp without the light bulb 'fuse' lighting up or the speakers becoming distressed or excursion being anywhere near their limits. This was at a 10 foot listening distance (ie. the typical distance from a cab when at a gig on a small to medium size stage). I should have got that on video, would make for a good YouTube.

I don't know how this relates to the 1W/1M sensitivity ratings, but my Acme Low B speakers have no issue being deafeningly loud even with a modest amount of power.

By the way, I've only blown the bulb once in one of my cabinets and that was while I was playing with some high gain distortion out of my Zoom pedal and I turned and faced the speaker. My bass's pickup and the Acme's tweeter were about 6 inches from each other and I heard a loud squeal of feedback, saw a bright flash, and then all the highs and mids were gone. The bulb was blown but it did its job of saving the tweeter and midrange woofer.

And in addition to all the above, I have an 8-ohm Acme Low B2W, the 'subwoofer' edition that is exactly the same except it is missing the crossover, tweeter and midrange. The wiring jack wires directly to the bass woofers without any sort of crossover or filtering and is run full range. I've occasionally used it as a subwoofer with my Mackie SRM 450 mains and it works fantastic, but you can pretty much do the exact same thing with the Acme Low B2 and just turn down the mid and high attenuator knobs to achieve the same effect.
