Acme Users Unite!!!

Acoustic coupling identical drivers provides a 3 dB gain in sensitivity. A stacked pair of B1s will be just as sensitive as a single B2. A pair of B2s will be as sensitive as a single B4.

Waaay cool...I happily stand corrected.

I've always wondered what an 8 cab array of B-1's (4 8-ohm cabs per side, into each channel of a CA-9) would sound like with all those extra mid and high drivers you'd have :bassist:

One of the other Acme fans on TB once addressed this question, i.e. highs and midrange response from B-1s vs. B-2s. As I recall, he reported that Andy engineers the B-1s so that a stack of four of them equivalent to two B-2s (and presumably eight B-1s equivalent to four B-2s) would have roughly the same degree of midrange and high-frequency response - despite having double the number of mid-drivers and tweeters. I can't verify any of this from experience. This is just what I've read... :hmm:

Either way, eight Acme B-1s being driven by a CA-9 would have to sound fantastic!

You, uh, planning to do something like that anytime soon? :hmm:

Just pipe dreaming a bit...:D

When I decided to check out Andy's cabinets I realized that, at my ever advancing age, a B4 would be too hard to handle so I bought a B2. The B1 was just a sparkle in Andy's eyes at the time. I found the B2 so incredibly responsive and easy to manage that I bought a second. When I built my PA I bought a second pair to double as my PA mains (Series II). They worked well but the light show scared me to death so I retired them from that role. When I use all four driven with 14 or 1500W They are truly magnificent.

Buying the B2s worked well for me. Load in/out is pretty easy and a dolly makes transport a breeze. I prefer to make more trips with a light load rather than one heavy load.

I was certain I had updated my Acme picture but apparently not. As there are now a few more of us who run 4 x B2s (when we can) I better post my current configuration.

When I'm haulin' that heavy rack and the CA9 I sometimes wish I could drive this setup with multiple MB-F1s, but as my Acmes are all 4ohm versions, I would need 4 of them.

I NEVER tire of seeing that picture. My god... that must just thunder!!!

My B2 arrived on Tuesday and I wasn't able to open the box until yesterday. I read the instructions on breaking it in so I played at very low volume. I tried it with my iAmp 500, GK 1001RB-II, and even my NeoPak. They all sound good through it (even the Neopak may be enough to power this). I'm getting used to the tone. I like it with my Mouse 30 but not sure about my EB's. Although, I'm sure once I can open it up a little and have more time to play with it, I'll have a different opinion.

While I'm not a fan of the Acme's for my 'standard' EB's, they are just WONDERFUL with the Rob Allen basses.... they really bring out the 'wood' of those basses, and also move the tone toward a more DB vibe to me, with the big low end and very 'modest' and natural upper mid and treble response. Really nice!!!!

NICE!

Have you tried different configurations of the 4 to see if there is a major difference in sound?
I see your setup has all of the mids/tweeters centered.

On the 3dB or 6 dB:
Had acoustics over 15 years ago(college, fun elective when you're in a band and in engineering school and in charge of PA placement). IIRC, the "rules of thumb":
1) Double your cone area AND power(i.e. double your acoustic power out) = 3dB gain or increase.
2) Proper physical coupling of cabinets can add another 3 dB
3) Add the two gains above to get 6 dB.

In the big PA days, we used to make every attempt couple "W-boxes" with 18's to get a "free" 3 dB as we called it. Same with the mid bass cabs(15's or two 12 cabs).
