Acme Users Unite!!!

A guitarist worse nightmare.;):D

I'm very happy with my one B-2.

For giggles I compared to the Markbass 2x10 (not sure of the model)

No comparison at all in the lowend.

You used have to be used to the lack of coloration that you recieve with the Acme.

For Markbass users I turn up the Mid Atten almost all the way up on the Acme and the VPF to about 11 on the MKII.

(Normally I keep the VPF off or just about)

From what I understand, the MB210 is not a good thing at all... probably as far away from the Acme as you can get. You might want to try the same thing with a Bergantino or Epifani210, or an EA NL-210... you might be quite surprised at the amount of usable low end that you can actually deliver to the audience without the need for hi pass filters etc., and how loud and full these can get with a very moderate amount of power.

The MB cabs seem to have very little in common with the amazing heads this company makes.

IMO.

nodnarb:

i run my B2 with 800 watts and it is perfect. im pretty sure i'm not pushing them hard at the volumes i run them at and the sound is great.

on the overdrive front:

while some not-so-nice overdrive pedals take away lows as you crank them, the good ones dont. my overdrive pedals worked great with my rigs before my acme, and work great with my acme, if not better because of the better highs that are truer to the highs i hear from my signal when i run them through my etymotics or other nicer headphones/IEMs. so the low extension of the acmes hasnt really affected how i, personally, have run my effects. my settings pretty much stay the same all the time, especially now that my Acme state sound is now close to my direct sound to the mains, so what i hear on stage is close enough to what people hear out in the audience, unlike most cabs out on the market.

can't comment on the vintage sealed 10"s sound.... never touched any cab of the sort :P

the sound i get from my B2 is much more complete than a nicer 12" cab from one of the boutiques, which seem to roll off way too soon, resulting in a weird B string tone that bothers me to no end. no guts!!!! augh!

I was too until I could afford more. It ain't lite and it's WAY more filling than the BOSE PAS with no FOH I'm using in smaller places. That night the drummer and I kept getting "Are you finished yet?" during tear-down and load out.

One REALLY amazing thing(my practice setup) is to run from your PC practice tunes ->Line 6 aux in + bass in ->QSC -> one ACME B2. Cut the bass a bit on the "recorded tune" and "play along" effectively replacing the bass player AND the ACME doesn't blink an eye. Full range no matter how low it's cranked.

hmmm i play mainly funk and r and b. I have a chance to pick one up for around 200 local. 210 4 ohm. should i jump on it?

If the midrange and tweeter work and the woofers aren't creased (look very, very closely at the cones about 1/4 to 1/2 in. away from the surround...if there is a line on the cone, they're creased and need to be reconed or replaced. See photo) that's a great deal! Andy's replacement woofer prices are quite reasonable though.

I picked up the gently used 4 ohm Series II B2 that I owned for just $149 at a MusicGoRound store (wish I still had it). It had a Warwick sticker or something over the badge on the grille. They also had a 4 ohm B2 Series I for $169 a few weeks earlier but the tweeter crackled so I didn't buy that one.

I know lots of folks have expressed concern about cone creasing, woofer excursion and the need for high-pass filter with Acme cabinets. IME, these speakers require breaking in, and they're certainly not MORE durable than those in other cabinets, but I've played pretty loud 5-string though Acme's for a good ten years without ever losing a woofer! Of course, I haven't tried the Acme's with my LMII yet ....

Lately, I've been playing a couple of 8 ohm Acme's with an Epifani 902c. This is a great combination, and it doesn't fart like my Demeter / Stewart World 2.1 combination sometimes did. I've also got several Epi cabs, including UL 112's (series I and II's) and a UL 410 series II. There's no question that Epi cabinets are more efficient than the Acmes (way more efficient), but in the bass, the Epi's are the polite cabinets! I love the Epi tweeters, and Epi cabinets are probably more balanced top-to-bottom, but for sheer omph, you just can't beat the way Acmes voice a B string (and the rest of the low end, for that matter)!

By the way, the best sound I've gotten in nearly 40 years of playing bass was this summer at an outdoor corporate picnic gig. The band was on a stage with no back wall. I used the Acmes with a Crest CA-9 and a Demeter VTBP-201s. It was heaven!! I'm still trying to recreate that sound!

Cordially,
Greg Backstrom

This is my first post, and this thread is the reason i registered. This thread in itself is testament to how amazing the acme cabinets are. I just aquired a used b-4II and it is most definitly the best purchase I have made.

Sorry for not having a picture, but i'm running an Ashdown MK500 head into the low B-4II cabinet. I play in a prog rock/metal band and it sounds perfect. Just the head direct is perfect.

I crank the gain input knob, and get a really nice sounding distortion. While this would normally kill the low end, there is still an amazing amount of low end and punch. It cuts through everything and sounds amazing. I LOVE IT!

Sorry for rambling, but I cannot get over how amazing this cabinet sounds. As for the headroom issue, the previous owner was putting about 2100 watts into this cabinet, and I was lucky enough to test it with my head and his. More wattage sounded amazing, but i love the sound I get with my head.
:D

Another point towards acme, little red(the ashdown mk-500) looks nice and sexy on top of it.

Thats great man! I love my red MK500 with the Acme Low B-2. Mostly soundwise, its a good combination! 600watts are perfect for this little monster.

got a chance to get a deal on a b4

if i get it i'll be pushing it with a aggie db750
do any of you guys have experience with this
also the cab is 8 ohm, is the 8 ohm power rating on the db750 enough?

I've pushed an 8-ohm Low B4 with as little as 325 watts and I can get loud enough to play at decent volumes. Works well. The amp was clipping as soon as I started pushing it with our band so I had to hold it back a bit. But it works, it just isn't enough.

Just got back from a 4-day long retreat using my B2 filling the stage and the first half of a 200 person audience in a warehouse/gym-type room with a HIGH ceiling that could've fit 600+. the low-end projected nicely all the way to the back, without a sub in the PA.

i keep telling mseylf to wait until i really need a 2nd B2 before i decide to spend the funds, but I honestly haven't really needed more than my single B2 so far.

great cab. makes what i hear very similar to what the audience hears, espeically with my effects board growing these days.

It'll probably sound freaking awesome with that amp. As with most amp/cab combos it depends on your band's overall volume. I ran a Thunderfunk 550B into my 8 ohm B2 and it was plenty loud for most stuff when playing with a trio.

If it's not loud enough you could always talk to Andy about getting new drivers. He does ohm conversions on the cabs all the time and will either let you send it to him for the conversion or he'll just send you the drivers and you can do it yourself.
