I have a few Glarry's so I get what you're sayingThey are not to bad but I've had to do set ups and generally fettle with them but they are cheap so I ain't complaining. The six string in the pics I had to replace the whole of the electrics pups as well. I made it passive. There was a fault with the original electronics. If you don't mind working on them they are ok
What's the dimension across on the lower bout?
And thickness dimension?
As someone who has used an ABG in rehearsal with five other musicians who told me I could be heard just fine and also in performance where I was told I could be heard just fine, I am a bit skeptical of all the "it's not loud enough" talk. If you are behind the instrument, of course it isn't; the sound is going away from you. The reason Tacomas and Timbres seem louder likely is because of soundhole placement.
I've used El Capitans and Ekos and presently am using the big Deans for that huge body, but if I have to go still larger I can.

These are great for a less clickity-click sound on an ABG

I took it in for a slight setup but 5inches at the widest is my guess. I'm not a big guy at all and its just fine. Hard to put down

I think they only made gig bags for the Baileys. I had a hardshell ABG case that I modified with a bit of foam and plush cloth. I'm not sure what the cost was as it was a gift. Love the neck on mine.
Yep, the bronze string sound is the sound of the ABG...if you want to get heard.
I loved the acoustic tone of my giant dean even with the recommended phospher/bronze roundwounds. Plenty loud enough for this bedroom solo shred melody lead 'bass player'.
But, sadly, my arthritis made it hurt too much to play very long.
Yep, @StevieD mos def got the biggest one hanging (more or less) horizontally. It even makes the mighty guitarrón look pequeño.
I gig with a guitar scale Ibanez fretless ABG constantly because:
-It’s tiny and lightweight. Perfect for little duo/trio gigs in tight spaces. Perfect for public transport into city.
-It plugs straight into the sound system. No extra cables, DI or pedals needed. Powerful preamp and balanced XLR out all built in.
-It has a fat, punchy, 3D tone that sits nicely in acoustic gig environments. Plus, fretless mwah when needed.
I use original bronze strings. They sound crud by themselves but great in mix with other instruments.

New member and this is my first post.
I found this forum while doing google search for "Fender acoustic bass BG29" because there is one local on CL with Fishman electronics for $150. Sight unseen it seems to be a good deal but I haven't gotten my hands on it (yet).
I used to play guitar but it's been years and I always loved the bass so I figured I'd start out with something simple where I don't don't need an amp. However there are cheap basses online (I'm sure you all know the brands without me having to name them) for like $75 with amps included. I'm thinking if I get that Fender it'll at least have some resale value if/when I want to pass it along.
What do you all think? Should I get a Squier Affinity J Bass for $225 bucks or get this ABG? I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to CL ads here but if I am then I'll link it for you all to take a gander at.
BTW, I'm not in a band. I'm planning on learning walking bass lines for jazz/blues so that figures into this as well. After gaining some proficiency I would like to find some others to jam with.

Welcome, I’m pretty new on here too. You’re right about the better resale value of the Fender. If you buy a Jazz Bass, you’ll also need to spend more for an amp. With this acoustic, you don’t need anything else, and it’s less expensive to begin with. You can see how you like playing bass.
I got an Ibanez AEB10E given to me, (which I don’t use professionally), but it’s fine for just having fun playing with friends.
Obviously they're 2 different instruments. The acoustic will be fun to play and you won't need an amp to enjoy it. If an amp is already in the plan the J will be good. But at $150 it's a good deal for the acoustic if it is in good shape. People buy them because they are really cool and fun. But it's hot or cold so people sell them pretty quick if they don't love it.
Should never have sold my 1977 Guild B50. No problem keeping up to two (unplugged) acoustic guitars & vocals.
Pfft. Need? Maybe not. But my upright will blow the sound of a campfire jam to 11.
Lots of good opinions on here, and see guys playing acoustic basses for other reasons such as quiet practice, finger strength, etc. But all the defenders of acoustic bass posting videos, they're plugged in. Tells you all you need to know about a bass guitar being truly acoustic capable....
I like the GHS pressurewound bronze - all of the volume and tone of regular bronze roundwounds without the squeaks and finger noise. Especially great on fretless ABG!

Yeah having played upright for decades along with solid body electric my experience with lots of higher end good sized ABGs was "meh". I'm used to playing with plenty of attack but even for moderate volume smallish settings ABGs regardless didn't cut it, and amplified they don't sound near as good as my electric basses.
