Acoustic bn112

If the Fender Rumble 112 street price is $299, the Acoustic BN112 street price should be at or slightly below that to properly compete. Don't know who's making the pricing decisions at GC/MF, but clearly they're doing some heavy drugs.

I'm in the process of writing MF asking the same question as you, soflbass. I hope to hear a response. I'm also looking at that same Ampeg cab because I need an additional speaker for later on this summer. Good point made.

So here's putting my mouth (which can be fairly large at times) where my $$$ is:

Dear MF:

Less than a week ago I could have purchased an Acoustic BN112 cabinet for $195 with 15% off. In the past few days though the price has soared to a whopping $399! To be honest, I always thought you undersold that particular cab because it really is great sounding, but the Acoustic line is a value-priced product and should not be competing directly with the others you sell.

You've taken what is very appealing to people with minimal budgets and are directly competing against the Ampegs and Fenders of the world. IMHO, it's a mistake, but one I do hope is reversible. I myself would have priced it between $250-275 before any rebate, where as we're currently looking at $340 even after a 15% discount!

Here's my biggest problem with this thinking: the resale value of the Acoustic brand is not worthy of such a price hike. If I could sell a piece for 80% of what I paid for it a year later that would be one thing, but Acoustic doesn't have the pedigree because it's your in-house brand, built cheaply compared to other brands, and tons of used product always available, keeping said resale prices down. So why on earth do you think your customer base, one of which I have been a part of for many years, would be interested in buying your entry-level product at the same price as your more reputed brands?

Again, a modest price increase was probably due because it is a great cabinet, but a 75% jump is beyond good business sense. I know a number of Talkbass forum members who are planning on waiting it out in the hopes the prices head back the other way. If not, I'll be adding an Ampeg 12" cab later this summer, replacing the Acoustic 112 that I was planning to buy this month.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to your response.

I also sent this to Guitar Center, knowing it's probably the same poor guy having to read it again. Too bad, I want a response, no matter how corporate it'll sound. As soon as I hear back I'll put it on here. I would pay $250 for that cab and not think twice about it because they'd still be undercutting most everyone, but at $400 there's just too much heavy competition to face. I could sell it, but I won't see that much back in return and then I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face because it is a good sounding cabinet. I know, the world should have such terrible problems. ;)

Ask and you shall receive. My response from MF:

Dear Mike,

Thank you for your recent inquiry. Prices are subject to change at any time. I don't know if or when the price will go down. If you were still interested in buying this amp, we could work on a better price for you.

Please feel free to contact me directly at 1-800-449-9128 ext 2607 if you have any other questions or concerns, or if you are not completely satisfied with your buying experience. Thank you for choosing Musician's Friend and have a great day!

Gearhead

Expected, but I still appreciate someone reading my email. I don't think the Gearheads will negotiate too far from $400, but if anyone wishes to try they may do so. Yep, $200 a pop is all of a sudden a super deal.

I'm, as of this PM, looking at Ampeg and their $50 rebate on their PF cabinets. The single 15 LF for three bills is looking mighty attractive, but no decision as of yet. That may make my BN112 available this month.

I had another gig yesterday where I could use my TH-350 over two BN112's. I ended up setting up outside of one of the guitarists vs my normal next to the drummer. I had to rotate the top BN112 90 degrees and point it at the drummer's head so he could hear me. This of course reduced the highs reaching me and made it sound very bottom heavy - in a good way. Fat but not flabby. I think that sums up these cabs - kindof like an old school sealed 2x15 but better :) . I play with flats and had no prob hearing what note I was playing.

I still want to check these out with my Ashdown CTM-30 to see if I can keep up with a moderate R&R band...

I just bought one and used it on a classic rock gig with a tone hammer 500. Sound was good, but a bit mid heavy, even with bass eq'd pretty high, and was kind of hard to compete with the band on loud songs. I might get a second cab this week to see if it brings the low end a bit more. I've never played a 112, but am hoping that 2 of them will compare sonically to my Avatar neo 212, but with more oomph (Avatar is 8ohms, so hoping for more cajones with a double-cab 4ohm load). Has anyone seen a significant difference in bass frequencies by using 2 of these cabs instead of 1?

While I cannot answer how two of these cabinets sound together, I can tell you that paired up with my PF-115 HE ( I know, I broke the unmatched cab law, but had no choice for this outdoors gig), it cut through beautifully while the cab the Acoustic rested on was handling the bottom.

It may not have been a perfect match, but it got me through a week of rehearsal and the all-day show. I wouldn't hesitate picking up another 112 if I was inclined to do so.
