I've been playing in a pit band trio of bs/dr/pn, in the gallery of theater that seats about 130 people. We're at the back of the room, above the audience next to light/sound booth, just under the ceiling, which I'd guess is about 25-30 feet high, playing out over the heads of the audience. It's a thrust stage at floor level with the lowest seats. None of the actors is given a mic. We first tried this configuration playing Heathers, and we struggled to find the right balance. I think it's hard to play rock music without cranking it up, but we finally managed it. It was the only way we could hear the singers!
So this time out, playing Young Frankenstein, I brought in my Acoustic Image Contra - 300 watts with a downfiring 10" speaker and a 5" mids driver. This worked fine, and the amp showed no strain at all. I am using the power amp only, putting my FX unit into the effects return. I'm very pleased that the speakers were able to manage a solid sound. Also pleased that I needed to carry only that small amp up two flights of stairs!
Is any company making combo amps of similar design? The Contra turns out to have been one of my best investments.
