Bad news this morning on the Musicman, he thinks the pre is shot. He's going to go a little deeper into it and check solder joints, but I might have to do a new pre. Pretty bummed about that, goes from playing and sounding great to doa with no warning signs. If the pre is done, anyone have recomendations on what to go for in a new one?

John East has 2 or 3 bands that are pretty well liked so Id start my search there.

Well took 2 of the basses to a local shop today, the MM and the Spector. MM bass he looked at and said it could be a couple things and he would have to check deeper, the Spector on the other hand, much to my surprise, worked when he plugged it in! He played with it some and tweeked one of the pots and it died again, so he's going to replace the pot for me. So 1 will be an easy fix the other is still in the air. The 3rd bass he thinks is the battery box, which I'm going to fix myself, if that doesn't do it he said bring it in. Like my Dad used to say " if you can fix it yourself do it, if your unsure of whats wrong, take it to someone who knows how to fix it".

My granddad told me to never let a locomotive mechanic work on your pocket watch.

That great to dead seems highly unusual but I guess anything is possible;
Maybe check with EBMM and see if you can send just preamp to them and they can check if defective and send you a new if so.[at a cost] Since you liked it as it was

You can roll the dice with an John East they do get high praise from users; although most wanted to change sound; like Me you may not[I have Stingray Special]

Yea, I like the way it sounds. It's a limited number bass, a MM sub with sterling electronics factory and that's from ebmm website! If I want a bass to sound a certain way, I buy the parts and build the whole thing like I'm doing with a 54 p bass replica I'm doing.

Not sure what the preamp is schematic wise, but these things are very simple schematics usually and have only one part to go dead, the op-amp chip. Some schematics also the use tantalum caps which can go dead as well from things like polarity switches. If you post some pictures of the preamp, maybe there is something to try.

Good news, Spector is done and he found a bad chip in the EBMM. Way cheaper than having to spend big $$$ on a new pre from EBMM.
