Adding a J-Bass Bridge Pickup to a P-Bass

Hey guys. I thought I would appeal to the forums for this one. Just want opinions.

So my very first bass I ever got was a pretty crappy Jay Turner P-bass. Pretty normal, nothing special. After about 4 years, I purchased a P-bass fretless neck. The neck works surprisingly well, but that's not the point though.

I'm thinking of putting a specialized J-bass bridge pickup on it, which I know would involve new electronics and a pick guard. While I am at it I want to replace the P-bass pickups too.

I know that the J pickup I'm getting is a passive / single coil. Its Seymour Duncan's Weather Report signature jazz pickup. There was some other thread devoted to this pickup, so I know that it is a solid choice. The reason I want it is to get that Jaco sound. I know it's a certain sound but it would be awesome to make my first bass a centerpiece for such a definitive era.

Ok so my question is: What P pickups would be a best pairing with this pickup? I want to stay passive if possible, but I'm willing to go active if I have to. Let me know your thoughts on this project.

You can certainly stay passive, but there are a few choices. The SPB-1 will balance well with the Weather Report, and so will the Antiquity and Antiquity II. There is no wrong choice among them, as they all sound great.

If you're not locked into that Duncan bridge (which I haven't heard but company 's solid) consider the Wilde pj set. Just bought a Fretless with these and absolutely love the tone with GHS tapewounds. If you 've got the Jaco chops these would get you close.

I have heard all the Duncan p pickups mentioned and can agree to their worth.
