Ok, I have a genuine question. For all you advocates of 8, 9, 10, 11, or how ever many strings you have (not saying I'm against it, but there is no way I would have the confidence to play anything that utilises the full extent and potential of a bass like that, I still struggle with my six string), where does absurdity start? As we all know, there are many simple minded people who can't accpet that some bassists express themselves in their own way and find this riciculous. So where does it start getting beyond sane for you insanely highly strung (highly strung = bass with lots of strings) bassists? Would you find 15 individual strings beyond usable? 16?

Although the most I've ever owned was a seven-string, I'll give my thought on it.

I think that 12 on a single neck is pushing it-not music wise, but because neck would be under a heck of a lot of stress. It also would have two more strings than you even have fingers to play (if you do the two-hand tapping bit), which is not the easiest thing ergonomically unless you play with your left hand over the fretboard Stanley Jordan-style. At that point, and probably even at the 11-string point, I think a doubleneck might be more benefical playing-wise, with the higher strings on one neck and lower strings on the next.

Good thread.
I own and play 4-5-and 6-string basses.
I don't care how many strings you like as long as you are happy?
My main giging basses are fretless 4-string and a fretted 5-string.
I play about 150- 175 gigs a year.
I have never seen another bassest useing a 7-8-9-10-11-string basses live.
I know your out there but is the % so small, or do players just play them at home?

Al Caldwell was on "The Veiw" and "Good Morning America" this past week playing a 9 string Benavente with Venessa Williams.

JT, Jauqo, Jorg Schroeder and Stew off the top of my head all play quite a bit out. Theres a number of players playing basses over 6, and 7 string really has become pretty common.
It all come down to the direction in which you want to go with the music and the range.

Big Picture the % is pretty small though.........

I've not heard him with her yet (I hope to get a video of GMA tomorrow though). He has just recorded 3 tunes on the christmas disc and a bunch on a 70s love song disc She's releasing and used the 9 string on all the tracks.... so we'll see :bassist:

To what Range he goes to with V, I'm not sure. I know he does go low, but not sure about Guitar parts. I do know he does Midi with V. He has Keyboard fills as well as other parts in some of the songs.

He is also suppose to be going out with Chuck Rainey as well when Chuck hits the road and with Chuck he will be playing Full range as well as Midi from what I understand.

If you contact Al, He's pretty easy to talk to and is usually more then happy to answer any questions. He's busy this month so response might be slow.

hey James,

for me personally, the 11 was one string too many. it is a totally playable instrument, but Garry's style and approach are very different from mine and he can use that higher range better than I can. I really use it most for composing (off stage) and for chordal stuff (live). with groups, you will find me exploiting the sub lows much more frequently than the highs.

I think it's really a matter of player and taste. Greg Campbell and Scott Hubbell are far smoother in the stratosphere of high frequency than I am, but on gigs like tonight's where I'm doing all solo I play a lot of higher register melodic stuff. it's a learning and evolution process.

where does the absurdity start? at the point you have range you cannot use based on your concept, approach, and technical ability.
