Oversoul, I think both 11's will be finished around the same time - about 5-6 months. I think I posted a couple of pics/info of the non-conklin 11 in the "show me your custom" thread.

I also have a fretless 9 in the works with Browne Basses (Link Removed) - I haven't had a new bass in 3-4 years so I figured, it's time to play catch-up. I'll start a thread about that one once it's get started - he's still planning it out. Mike Browne's bass at NAMM was my favorite of the entire show.

I had never seen this Luthier, his work is very nice, you can see the influences of his teacher, but he found his own style. I am curious to see how a 9 string will look with these shapes

His left hand looks a bit twisted from the neck width, its the best instrument to acctually start caring for correct hand positioning. Many players are so used to thin bass necks that they gain a lot of habits like overtbended wrists, theres no escape on this one. :hiding:

Playing these extended range basses requires some different left hand techniques. One way to elminate the overbend of the wrist is to being the whole hand in fromt of the fb; thumb included.

I know that I often use a modified DB thumb position technique when playing 7. I can see that this approach could be even more beneficial on the 11.

FWIW, (my first post in this thread since I've never seen it before)---the 11 string Adler is freakin' awesome. Kudos to anyone who can play that beast effectively :)

Because you are one of the first to embrace the 4 and 1/2 plus octave basses ,one may think you are just hyping those multi string monsters. The fact is many will discover what you already know. That is "you haven't experienced bass until you've felt 18hz from a bass string".

This year has been a great year in realizing that as bassists ,we have access to the same range as our piano playing friends. They boast when they can "kick" left hand bass .Well they are no longer the center of the rhythm section universe. Mike Adler's bass has opened a door that has forever affected bass history. I have seen picture of your 10 string and I am proud.We are participating in the evolution of music because of the new sounds we are introducing into music. The "multi string bass guitar" may be the most influential American instrument since the electric bass ,guitar and banjo. As I once read in a Mad Magazine circa 1966 -a comic strip depicting kids after Christmas with new gear, and one of them says " we have all this cool equipment-drums ,guitars, amps ...... now all we have to do is to learn how to play them"
All of us have a responsibility to show the world why we have all these strings. I just increased my practice schedule!
Mike Adler's 11 sring has some secret ingredients, as it were , that makes it immune to warping or neck problems of any kind. The neck may appear big , but the thin neck profile makes it easy to play. Stew ,having played the 11 string within weeks of it's completion, has made an accurate assesment of the instrument.
And as Ringo said in "A Hard Days Night"- "being middle aged and old takes up most of your time"

hey man,

I just calls 'em as I sees 'em. I think that 11 is a great axe and I would very much like Mike to build one for me someday, only with one less string!

since playing that instrument I have begun to approach my own in different ways and I am really excited to see what the coming year (and subsequent years) will bring with the my 10!
