This is my first season actually watching it. Although I hate Simon, he is a marketing genius. First he gets all of America interested in trying out. Lots of talent (and un-talent) to choose from, publicity and commercials. Then America watches--loving to see both the good and the really, really bad. Again, commercials. Then all the Idol hopefuls compete for a record contract with HIS RECORDING COMPANY--so basically he gets to find out who America likes best (test marketing at it's best) and then after they win everyone buys their records and goes to see them in concert. They've already got exposure, they've already got fans--so not big marketing push needed to get them "introduced." Just make the record and sell it and tour. It doesn't even matter who wins, they'll all be big.
Plus, all the Idol hopefuls that didn't win have already signed papers saying he owns them, so if they go on to make records or movies he gets a cut. I'm sure some of them get record deals with him. Bonus! More for Simon.
GENIUS. Hateful, but genius.
That being said, I am learning a lot by watching it. Tips they get are tips I can use for my own performance. My favorite is Jordin. Beautiful voice, beautiful face, lots of emotion, only 17. Melinda's voice is the best, but Jordin has everything needed to be a star.
