advice an slap/funk bass

I've tired of my Fender American Jazz for funk.
My carvin LB75 holds the fort for most of my work.
Lookin for a new slap sweetheart.
Can i get some advice on where to start looking.
I hear stingrays are good,
also lookin at ibanez n warwick,
any advice greatly appreciated.
Budget:under $1700 for the new beast.

Yeah, if you cant funk it up with a Jazz bass, you may not have it in you. Maybe some lighter strings may help playablity. Some active pickups may help the sound. Its got to be punchy.

but in this order:

stingray/big al/sterling/bongo.

i own all of them. my fav is the big al, but if i were doing a slap happy gig i think I'd grab the stingray. also, the added single coil on my stingray opens up a whole different array of thunderous slap tones on that bass. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend going for the HS. and HS as opposed to HH for slap space, in addition to versatility. for some reason the HS seems to get sweeter sounds to me than the HH. I think they look better also. my $.02.

If you like jazz bass necks...Musicman Sterling is my favorite for slap bass. Out of my 9 basses, the Sterling just kills the most when spanked. P-Basses and J Basses with the neck pup favored can also get you that nasty old school 70's slap funk tone.

Yes, if you have a .50-.110 set of high tension strings ( I.E EB Power Slinkies) funking it up will be dificult to accomplish. I had some, then went back to my regular set of Rotosound 66 .45-.105 lower tension steel rounds, and it became much easier.

I like the mtd kingston artist for funk slap. It's much lighter then the music man, and sounds better imo. More fun to play.

I have a sterling, I love it, but when it comes to straight up bouncy, fun funk, I think a modulus or MTD are a way better route. Musicmans are too heavy and like, raggedy for my kinda slap

A J bass is not necessarily the right funk bass for every one who plays funk.


The OP really just needs to play as many basses as possible to get the right one.

we need to know what you don't like about the jazz... is it neck, sound, etc...

it can be as easy as changing strings and/or getting a good setup, or maybe you need a different bass to get what you want...

Schecter Diamond P5. Mine plays better than my Geddy Lee bass or my Rick, and at a fraction of the cost. It came with D'Addarios on it and I may switch from DR Marcus Millers. The combination of bass and strings is sweet. Thump-pop-ping. Beautiful.
