advice an slap/funk bass

I've owned laklands, spectors, fenders jazz's including a 77, stingrays, curbow and an elric. Some slapped better than others, but one thing I have gathered is that there is definitely a formula. When I hear slap I think Marcus (that goes for tone and style) and ash body, maple board and a really bright but tight pre with booming lows is what does it for me. With that said the best slap tone i've ever produced was and is from my Carvin sb5000 with single coils, amp set flat with a slight boost of the bass and treble. It's the only bass i've ever owned that slaps with authority even when the string get old.

Thanks all for the input,
Been tied up with a gig,bit tired,and finally got back to the thread.
My J bass is active,I've tried so many combo's of round wounds,and guages still can never get the tone i want out of the thing i'm looking for.I can get the pop i want,but lose the thump.I've even run non normal guages on E/A and lighter on d/g.still not good,even went so far as to put a B string on the E once,still not getting it done.
I recently put some ground rounds on, of all things, and got much closer to the slap tone i'm after,it's actually workable.
the thing just has way too much twang and brightness on the E/A, i cannot adjust it out with the active controls.I'll stick with the ground rounds on it for now,as it's the best i've found for the thing,still doesn't even come close to an old japanese passive J bass i played years ago, and kick myself for not buying,or even a friends carvin 4 string i played quite a few yrs back.I'm a bit finicky when it comes to killer funk tone.
I'll look into the modulus and other basses that have been suggested.

I play a Warwick corvette standard 5 string, and i love the thing. The slap tone is fantastic. I went into a shop the other week, looking for a new bass, and i tried the fender american standard jazz bass and to be honest i was disappionted. I'm yet to come a bass with better tone than the Warwick i own at the moment.

I own a warwick corvette standard and a warwick double buck.. Ide say try one of those out. They have awsome slap tones and the double buck is really versatile

If you're looking into Warwick, I'd lean toward the Thumb, and after that the Streamer. Both have the contoured body shape, which is nice for digging in during slap, but the Thumb seems to take to the style better tone-wise IMO.
