Hey there Talkbassers, I was wondering if anyone had some set up advice for doubling electric and upright bass. I have an Aguilar tone hammer 500 and 2 sl112s and love the set up but what would be a good way to have both basses set up for a gig without a lot of unplugging and changing eq settings? Can I run a dedicated preamp for my upright through the effects return and just leave my upright plugged in?

Double Bass Advice for doubling

Radial Tonebone Bassbone V2 ==> Tonebone Bassbone V2™ - Bass Preamp and DI Box
I have the original Bassbone as well as the PZ-Pre - both great 2-channel boxes. But the Bassbone V2 is more specific to your issue - one channel for electric bass, one channel for the piezo on an upright bass (assuming that's what your upright pickup is - if not, please elaborate). You can toggle between the two channels by footswitch.
Or you could get a preamp for your upright and a simple A/B switcher.
I have had success doubling with Genz Benz shuttle 3.0. The upright goes through the Fdeck to the main input. When I am not playing the UB bass I can use the mute switch. I run the electric through Hartke bass attack pedal that goes into the Aux in on the back of the amp. Works great since I have tonal and volume control over both. This is kinda the poor mans solution, but it works.
I tried a lot of different routes for this but in the end the only method that worked for me was building a pedal board. It may be larger than most people would like but it suffices as a dual preamp/DI and I can now use any backlined amp. I can also send separate DI signals for double bass and bass guitar or a single DI send for soundmen want to run only one xlr cable for bass. Honestly it isn't that bad. It all lives on a board that stays in it's own case. I have found that I'm more amenable to doing ampless gigs with this board also.
My board consists of
bass guitar > tuner > sansamp paradriver
double bass > fishaman pro plat EQ > tuner > Radial DI
then both of these into a boss a/b switch

IMO you have a great amp for doubling.
I just pull the cable from my PBass and plug it into my Full Circle equipped Upton. Straight into my TH350 and 2x10.
Bring down the drive fromm 11:00 to 8:00 turn down some upper mid and im good to go. Quick and simple.
I do have an fdek, fishman and zoom multi effect but havent needed any of them....yet.

The issue is how much time do you have between songs to switch over between instruments. A pedal board will allow you to switch quickly and your gain structures will remain consistent throughout the gig IMO.

While I'm certainly no expert, you've come up with a elegant solution. Just wondering what the advantage of running the EDB-2 as an effects box
rather than just plugging it into the return. I think we both have, is an excellent doubling setup.

yes. Only the level of gain for the electric bass and the eq+gain for the DB.
This way I can use the eq on the TH500 for the electric bass and the independent level knobs on the Headway to match/set the levels between the EB and the DB. If I'm going to use only the DB then I just plug straight into the return.
It seems like the Headway eq would effect the xlr out so the EB would be effected eq wise, unless the xlr out is pre effects loop.
The eq on the headway can be assigned to both channels or either one so I understand that it won't affect the EB side if I set the switch to "channel 2".
Not to belabor this, but won't the Headway eq effect the EB in the Agui input? Maybe you bypass the Headway when you play EB...
Eric, I'm sorry but I don't get it. Let me see if I can explain myself better: Regarding the EB, the signal goes from the Sadowsky to the input on the TH500, then I eq the it to my liking and the signal goes from the 'send' to the ch. 1 on the Headway, I set the gain for that channel in the HW and the signal goes on unafected by the HW's eq straight to the output that sends it back to the 'return' on the Aguilar.
I use a simple a/b signal path, though I've only had 2 gigs this year where I needed to double and only one more on the horizon right now :/
Upright signal:
Vic's bridge pickup -> Sansamp Paradriver -> Cheapo ebay a/b box -> tuner -> SVT-3 pro -> speaker
BG signal just goes straight into the a/b box -> tuner -> amp.
On smaller gigs I just use the Sansamp straight to the Power Amp In on the Ampeg, or Sansamp -> PA
Upright signal:
