Advice on Speakon jacks/options for Bag End cabs

One thing to remember about the "C" (black carpet) cabs is that the jack plate is smaller than the replacements that BagEnd sells at the moment. Some of the early "D" (red carpet) cabs also used the smaller jack plate.

I have a few of the black carpet cabs and I make my own cables with speakon at the amp and bananas at the cab. If you buy quality bananas, they fit very nice and "tight". I get mine from partsexpress.

I also have the early 2000 version S15XD that uses the "2" posts in the speakon. I currently use the bananas on that as well. If I were to use a speakon, I would buy a colored 4 pole and wire it up to the 2+/2- and I would recommend a color other than red so as to not confuse it with "bridge" cables.

This jack plate wiring can not be changed without soldering.....

Pin 1 connections pass from one connector to the other, this is necessary for the original biamping protocol as used primarily in pa applications.

I pointed out that a tech might be necessary because on the pcb picture shown, 2 traces need to be cut and jumpers installed.

Ah ok...I had a "duh" moment I guess. I read it as "pin 2s are wired in parallel, but pin 1s loop through (which to me sounded like the very same thing)", I suppose I would have been less confused if it just read "parallel inputs", or if everything was on the same line. I shall now leave this thread in shame.

Sorry to resurrect a old thread but I have a couple of Baggies that won't produce sound also. $68 per jack plate is absurd!! Now I am going back to a rack system and using a QSC PLX1804 amp because I want two channels. For the output connectors on the PLX1804 it states the following in bold.

Output Connectors, each channel Neutrik NL4 Speakon® / Neutrik NL4 Speakon® and touch-proof binding posts / Both channels available on Ch 1 NL4 connector

Does this mean that the connecting to the Bag End cabs will not require this custom wire that was mentioned in an earlier post on this thread?

Or will I need to make this custom wire still? And if so I am guessing that on the amp end I connect 1+/1- and on the cab end I connect to 2+/2- ... is this correct?

The cabinets should both be wired as 1+/1- and you would use the two SpeakOns on the amp (L & R or Chan 1 & 2, I forget how QSC labels them) which are wired 1+/1-. Use 2 wire cable and only use the 1+/1- terminals on the plugs.

this way everything will be standard.

Tonight I tried connecting a Yorkville amp which states it's Speakon output is wired 1+/1- to both Bag End cabs and neither produced sound. I then connected a Speakon to 1/4 from the amp to the cabs and they worked. Also tried the other direction (1/4 from the amp to Speakon on the cab) and it did not produce sound on either. Very odd

Older Bag Ends that I've seen have the Speakons wired to 2+/2- and need to be changed to the standard 1+/1- format if you want to use a standard two conductor cable, as Andy suggested. ;)

This is what I suspect to be the case. I don't think I am up to rewiring the plate, not really skilled at all that. So making a 1+/1- to 2+/2- custom cable is the answer then I presume?

yes, and mark the cable clearly so that it can’t be mistaken for a standard cable.
