Advice on what bass to buy?

I play a bit of everything from metal to funk. Currently I want learn more RHCP stuff so want decent slaps and pops. I want to spend the least amount possible to get the guitar I require so I don't need to buy a better one later. I don't how much that is.

I don't know much about bass guitars. I normally play 6 string. I have just started getting into bass. I have a Ampeg 100W 15" amp.

I have been using a borrowed 5 string which no longer works. I still need to fix it though, see here to give advice on how I can fix it. I am probably leaning towards a 4 string bass though. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10417580#post10417580

Either of those would be fine, based on what you're looking for.

Here on Talk Bass, you will be pelted with rocks and bottles for considering a FleaBass, but I personally like what I have seen and heard of them.

Instead of the Jazz Bass with the EQ, I suggest a passive Jazz Bass instead, at least to start with. Maybe a Squier Classic Vibe, or a MIM Fender Jazz Bass.

Used here in the classified section at Talk Bass is an excellent idea, too. You can find the $599 Jazz Bass I linked above here used for about $400 frequently.

Played a FleaBass Street not long ago in a pawn shop. Loved it. I now consider myself a FleaBass fan Have no practical reason to buy one, so I won't, but man it sure played great for $175

I wouldnt pay over $250 for it. I got mine for $170 with a chip at the very bottom. Looks metal but covers anything without any problem

Those 30" Flea's are indeed very hot, and guys he's said he's trying to spend as little as possible. I don't know that MM and G&L fall into that category...

Thanks, but I don't want to buy second hand internationally since there is too much risk. A new bass from a well regarded selling would be OK. Or a local used bass.

Thanks. What is the difference between these 2 and what does SBMM stand for? The musicman stingray seems to cost $1500 and the other one is more like $500 from what I can tell.

Are you talking about the cheap version of the stingray, or the expensive sterling that is sold along side the original stingray?
