Would a 61 year old, non-competitive, weak (but dedicated) upright bass player enjoy the camp? The list of teachers is impressive but intimidating, as well. I worry about being embarrassed by my incompetence.

Jamey's camps have a large contingent of minors, and a special set of staff to help monitor their whereabouts and safety. There is a special dorm and meal plan for minors, and they have to check in with the staff each morning and evening to ensure that everyone is happy, healthy, and accounted for. One of the things I always like about teaching there is the chance to reach people who are playing jazz at much earlier ages than I did. In some cases, the young folks are playing at an age when, at the same stage in my life, I didn't even know what jazz was!
This does seem like it would be fun, but the very thought of
having to fly my bass and amp from Portland to Louisville is
daunting. Not sure which is scarier, the thought of damage
or just the cost![]()
There's no reason to bring an amp to the camp unless you're driving - amps are provided to those who come from distances. Most bassists who play DB choose to drive so they can bring their own axe. Among the faculty who fly, Rufus Reid has a travel bass with a detachable neck, and Lynn Seaton has a Czech Ease. The venerable and esteemed Mr. Goldsby follows the time honored tradition of flying in empty handed and then mooching a bass when he gets here.
There are a few rental DB's provided to DB players who choose to fly in but can't bring their basses. However, I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're prepared to play what you might expect from a rental bass.![]()

You could take the opportunity to start telling banjo jokes... (like the one about the bass player who locked his keys in the car... it took him 3 hours to get the banjo player out...)
