Aerodyne Clone Build

Thanks bannybassman and dremy2006.

Can't wait to get this finished. I have a jam this Saturday at a friends house and I want to use it, so it looks like Thursday will be the day. I have to wetsand the whole thing and buff it out. I already have the wiring harness done, so it's just assemble and set it up after that.

BassGen has already said I can post a pic in the Aerodyne club. I'm looking forward to an honorary membership. :D

Well I was going to start on this Thursday, but some time opened up today so I jumped on it.

I got the whole thing wetsanded. I buffed out the front of the body and headstock, and also the back and sides of the headstock.
I couldn't wait to see what it was going to look like so I went ahead and installed the tuners, bridge, pickups, and the jack plate. I also got the holes drilled for the controls.

I still have to buff out the back and sides of the body, and the neck. The wiring harness need to be installed and the pickups hooked up. Then all thats left is the nut, a little dressing on the frets, and a setup.

Nearly there!

That is looking so sweet!

Final set of pics.
Installed the wiring harness and hooked up the pickups. Cleaned up the fretboard, leveled and crowned the frets, and installed the nut. I had to file slots on the saddles and I strung it up with flats and did a setup.

I'll try and get some clips recorded and put up in the next couple of weeks.

Awesome work Mike.

I'm curious how you did the binding, since you first sculpted the shape and then, I assume, put the body face down onto a router table to create the notch for the binding?

Also looks like you used pure white material instead of cream colored binding?

That probably would have been the correct way to do it, but I don't have a router table so I did it with a small handheld trim router. It mostly came out OK but I had to "adjust" it in a few spots with a small file. This being only my second build I'm still learning techniques as I go.

I do setups and repairs out of my garage so everytime I make a bit of money I buy more tools. A router table is definately on my list!

Yes I did use white binding. A bundle of it came up cheap on e-bay so I grabbed it. I have enough to do about 20 more basses.

Awesome build. Love everything about it except the strat jack plate and the knobs... I think side mounted jack would have looked better.

Thanks.

I was copying one of these. A Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass, so it would have been kind of pointless not to use the set of Aerodyne hardware I got off e-bay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I like the way an Aerodyne Jazz looks. Thats why I made one. :D

Didn't remember those had those jacks... awesome work either way...

When I finished this bass two years ago, It came out pretty good for my second build, but there were a few cosmetic issues that had always bothered me that I now know how to fix. While structurally it was a good build, my finishing skills were a little weak at the time, so I have decided to revisit this build and do some upgrades. Here she is all stripped down and ready for her makeover. More to come soon.
