I heard that Galvestons aren't really that great sounding, but I have never tried one. So don't believe me just because I heard it somewhere.

I've got a Galveston and it sounds decent and doesn't play badly; just don't expect a Conklin. And back on topic, the Gibson Ripper is set-neck and usually sells for $450-$700.

On the extreme budget side, the Jay Turser Beatle bass has a set neck, and most other copies do too, I believe. They can be had for $200 to $250 and are pretty nice copies.

Other Turser models might have set necks, too.

You can get a bass made to your specs (woods, fingerboard, finish) with a setneck for a grand or less. I have an LB20 I got for under $700US, with case and shipping.

I believe the Alembic Epic is a set neck. Used they're right around a grand. Friend of mine found one for $850.00.

On a whim I sprung for an ESP LTD Viper 5 (discontinued 305 model) string on ebay a while ago. This has a 5 piece set neck, and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised at the craftsmanship and sound. Definitely worth looking into if you are set on getting an affordable set neck bass.
