Aggressive sounding, Mid-Heavy basses?

For you folks recommending Spector, can you name any specific models around the ~$700 range?

Tupac - The Spector REX will do exactly what you want, it's very agressive. I bought my REX5 a few months back in mint condition for about $500. The REX5 is TBird kind of body style with a 35" scale neck thru design with the EMG HZ pickups. It's about half the price of a Euro built Spector but has a lot of the same features. Mines a 5 string and is a dream to play with it's narrow width and thin profile dive free neck. Heres some pics....

The finish is a "love it or hate it" Holoflash finish that constantly changes as light hits it at different angles. Evantec has an awesome quilted maple one in transparent black and last I looked there is a very rare transparent red quilted REX in the TB classifieds.

A Warwick (preferably a Thumb), any EBMM (maple or ebony fretboards work best), ESP Surveyor II, Fender Jazz (preferably one with a maple or ebony fretboard and 70s pup spacing), or a Rickenbacker strung with bright rounds (Rotosound Swing Bass 66, DR Lo-Riders, or Ernie Ball Cobalts in order of my personal preference) plugged into a GK head with either a GK or Hartke cab (4x10 or 8x10) played with a pick or with a heavy right hand should give you all the growl you want.

Also, if you plan on going the Warwick/Specter/ESP route, I would recommend buying used. For reasons that are beyond me, all of these brands have ridiculously low resale values so they often be found used for ~60% of normal retail price.

And P basses can growl. My loudest and growliest passive bass happens to be a Squire Mike Dirnt. Not only does it sound like the pissed off offspring of a Stingray and a Wal, it also only weighs about 6.5 lbs. :bassist:

Put me down in the "love it" camp - that's gotta look great on stage, under the lights... I might have to check one of those out...

I agree with the Spectors, especially a US one with the Haz. Mid grind for miles. Can't believe no one has mentioned an EBMM Sterling. With its pups in series that bridge humbucker brings the low mids like no other. The Big Al will also do that. The Sterling is the only bass I've ever had to cut mids on.

In no particular order

1. Spector NS2
2. MM stingray/sterling
3. Fender Jazz
4.G&L L2000(2500)
5. Wal
6. Gibson T Bird

Remember that the right combination with amp is crucial! IMO when it comes to aggressive rock go with an all tube Ampeg head and 8X10 with any of these basses and you will be happy with the results! Consider Mesa also....

GK amps have a nice midrange growl too. Hartkes growl too, but it is more focused in the high end.
