Aguilar blue lights - Too Bright!


Honestly, a cool idea. I can see using them all around the house. The lights on my TV and related equipment, (home theater etc) are a major PITA. Very distracting to say the least. For starters, I'm getting a sheet just for that. On a side note, I have actually heard complaints about the LED on my REDDI from audience members. I've been covering it up with gaff tape. This will look much better.
 
I've added resisters to a number of different LED's on pedals because they were just to blinding on dark stages. The EDEN WTDI is one of the main ones I've moded and read of people complaining about. The LED's can blind you to the point that you cant read the text on the knobs.
 
For anyone who is past the warranty period of their amp and wants to lower the intensity of the blue (or any) LED, a single resistor in series with the LED will sometimes do the trick. You can either replace the original one with one of a higher resistance, or add an additional one in series. The exact value would depend upon the particular circuit and personal taste. However, please read agedhorse's (Genz Benz engineer) cautionary below before attempting this! As he says, this is not possible to do with certain LED circuits:

Just a heads up that this may not be a good idea for amps that use the current steered through the LEDs as part of the switching logic in a footswitched amp. I know our amps are not the only ones that do this, and changing the current (brightness of LEDs) can affect the operation of the switching logic as it's based on a voltage shifting constant current loop. This is a very effective, robust and troublefree method of discrete logic management.

Not sure if the LEDs in question are 5mm or not, but this vendor has some really nice diffused blue ones for a pretty decent price. Just got mine in today, along with some very cool ovalized yellow ones from the same place.

Oops. This would have never have occurred to me! I incorrectly assumed that an LED indicator circuit is never anything more than just the LED and a series resistor. :o Thanks for catching this and providing this very important information! I'll edit my previous post and add that cautionary.
 
Nail polish is an old trick used to dimming down flashlights by amateur astronomers when out in the fields at night.They need a light source but can't loose their vision either. Just a dab of red or something dark will fix the issue. Apply sparingly until the amount of brightness is achieved. If you mess up, low strength acetone applied with a q tip with remove it instantly. If not, use a Sharpie permanent marker, allowing a few minutes between coasts, usually two or three. Sparkle and crazy Teen colors optional. Hope this helps, Jeff
 
I use black nail polish on my Peavey IPR, an amp known for offensively bright lights. On the front panel indicator LED's the nail polish dims them a bit but they're still fairly bright. There are several banks of interior LEDs that light the chassis vents, and I've blacked out about 2/3 of those...and its still pretty bright. I'd certainly consider those dimming sheets, if they don't look like crap.
