Aguilar OBP-3 preamp

my OBP-3 will be arriving soon. It's for my Warwick Thumb BO5. I have no idea how it's going to sound like. I hope i dont have to replace the pick ups (no budget yet). I do hope they make a good pair!

It's a great preamp. Should play well with most any electronics. Do you have the MEC jazz pickups in there?

I will say Be care when boosting or cutting a little turn makes a lot of difference.

It's a nice preamp, fairly warm and organic sounding if that makes sense. The one downside of it (and it's small), is that the bass pot can be quite overwhelming. A tiny nudge will give you a nice boost.

The OBP-3 made a positive difference to my Spector.

I tried a few different setups in my Thumb when I had one. Don't recall the combinations but at that point I likely would have used an Aguilar pre. FWIW I came to the conclusion the pickups are great and the preamp was the weak point.

I think you'll be happy with the change.

I've had an Aguilar in a BO Thumb and I currently have one in my Thumb NT 6. The Aguilar preamp is "transparent" but it's slightly on the darker side. However, that is not to say that it doesn't sound good. If you still have your MEC pickups in there, it will pretty much sound the same except that it won't sound as scooped as with the original MEC preamp. Instead, you will have a more mids-focused sound with serious muscle. As stated by others above, a little bit really does go a long way with this preamp. The mids are insanely powerful as is the bass. This preamp is pure power! You're going to love what it does for your Thumb! Enjoy!
