I am sure this is a nice instrument but how often would you actually need to use it?

I'd be all over that!

gotta love CL
Last week we sold my wife's mercedes. I put the original wheels back on the car prior to the sale
So I have a set of 19 inch bazo wheels, with tires that are only 2 months old, and no mercedes to fit them on. I listed them on CL for $750 best offer, or trade.

I get an offer for $350. Then I get numerous emails cussing me when I said I was not interested. He went on to say that I was trying to cheat people by selling curbed.damaged rims. Then my add was flagged

Yep, weirdos and flakes abound. Last guy I dealt with was gonna trade my Ibanez SG for his Roland recorder. Correspond for 2 days, bring the bass to work with me only to have him email me about 2 hours before we were supposed to meet saying "he got his days mixed up and won't be in the area tonight". What the fudge? He had his daze mixed up alright. Time waster!

Any service that is 100% free will result in a "mixed" crowd that you come in contact with. The respect and fairness I receive on here (99.9% of the time) concerning sales is rarely found outside our forums. To be fair, about a little over half the responses I get from CL are respectable...it's not a terrible forum depending on your area.

Depends on where you live. Here in Fort Collins Colorado, I've sold two basses in the past 72 hours - and I listed my cell phone for the contact. I have gotten some spam emails from Craigslist postings, but so far, over the past three years of occasional Craigslist postings, I have never gotten a crank phone call.

Maybe our crazy factor is a bit lower here.

Pilgrim - I agree, the area will have a big impact on the CL sane to insane ratio. I spent a lot of time in Fort Collins (lived on the peak to peak highway between Jamestown and Ward and went to jr high and high school in Nederland). Great area, loved the scenery and people and still have relatives in Fort Collins and Boulder. Here's to continued good luck for you on the Craigslist sales, there are some killer deals on it from time to time.

I have had more crazy sellers on craigslist in portland selling stuff. I had one selling an ampeg ba 115 for 450$ because she bought it new for that much. another one that was selling a squier affinity p bass for almost 300$. It was beat up and his reasoning that it was worth that was it was owned by him and he was famous in his eyes. Also scored some good gear on there for cheap but for every 1 honest buyer/seller you meet atleast 4 psychos on craigslist.

I've got two people tentatively scheduled to check out a Crown power amp and a wah pedal tomorrow. After reading this thread, I'm starting to wonder if I should have invested in a carry-and-conceal license instead of a new bass amp. I'll meet them at a coffee shop or the public park, and never even consider letting them in my home.

So far I've had pretty decent luck on CL deals, both as a buyer and a seller. However, it never hurts to keep your guard up and trust your instincts.

Nothing freaky, absurd or sketchy about this ad. My question is: anybody know if this project is worth it? I don't want to spend my time building this bass only to realize it is just a self-made piece-o-junk. BTW, ad is current as of 12-27-11

Wow!

I was going to offer a grand and to come down to Albany to pick it up, today. However, with your attitude I will only wish you luck in finding someone who will put up with it.

Merry ****ing Christmas to you too! And that's firm!

My reply - I dont see what your freaking out about? you sir have the attitude. I have many interested parties so obviously your the one with a problem , good luck taking care of that.

His reply-

Gotcha!

(10 minutes later)

So, you're not interested in my offer?

Conclusion-craigslist is a strange place , reserved for the obviously mentally insane.

Welcome to the crap I used to deal with when I was working in a music store. If you think that is fun, try having someone say that to your face. :rollno:

Ahhh... how I miss retail :hiding:

If you ever watch "Hardcore Pawn" on TV (I only see it rarely, don't have a TV at my place right now) there are actually a lot of people out there that will behave like this. Some way or another they seem to reason that the attitude displayed here will bring you down to their price, or whatever it is they might want.

That show is very, very fake...

My "best" CL experience: a guy posts looking for some closed-back bass tuners, for a restore he`s doing. I notice that they look exactly like the Squier Affinity tuners. So I email him, and tell him I`ll trade him a set for some traditional open tuners, or I`ll sell `em. He wants pics and exact measurements. I send him all that, then he wants to haggle the price down from $25. I tell him that`s what they run for on Ebay and send him a link. I`m not really trying to sell mine, just trying to help a bass brutha out; I suggest he check Ebay and maybe score a set cheaper. He says he doesn`t wanna fool with Ebay; he needs `em asap. So I reiterate the price and he agrees. We arrange a place to meet, but he never shows. I call him, and he tells me he has to stay late at band practice - sorry. A week later I get an email, says he`s "ready to meet me for real this time". I agree, and tell him that I will have to get ready for work early (in other words = show up). After I get up and ready for work an hour early, he emails me as I`m walking out: "Sorry, I forgot about the game coming on tonight - can`t do it". I reply "good luck finding your tuners elsewhere". His response " What`s with the attitude - get up on the wrong side of the bed ?" Next day, email: "So, when can we meet ?" *** ?!? Society in general is becoming appallingly self-centered.

I'm confused....was his email in response to an email you sent him, or to the wording in your ad?

The key to Craigslist (and life, for that matter) is to avoid the idiots. While you might want to get the last word, but it's just not worth it. Better to ignore the crazy responses and the obvious nut jobs.

I've learned this lesson the hard way. I recently sold a bass on CL, and one guy seemed quite interested. He seemed a little odd in his emails, but I ignored my gut. We spent 45 MINUTES on the phone discussing every little aspect of the bass. He asked me the same questions over and over again. Then, he wanted to see it. We spent another HOUR looking over the bass, and asking the same questions over and over again. He FINALLY bought the bass. The phone calls continued. First, he decided that he needed the original polishing cloth that came with the bass, so I stuck it in the mail. Then, he broke a lead to one of the pickups trying to remove an accessory, so he started calling again. I told him what he had done wrong, then pointed him to a capable repairman to fix the damage. The calls kept coming. He wanted me to pay for the damage he caused. In the interim, he claimed the cloth didn't arrive in the mail and that I had created a fake original receipt, among other things. I finally sent him some money so he could buy a "Factory" cloth, hoping that would be the end of it.

The calls and emails only stopped when I made it clear that I considered his behavior threatening, and that I intended to treat every further communication as such.

My favorite response (since I get like 15 of them for every single item I list on CL from $50 items to $11000 items) is:

"Hello, is your item still available?"

if your item is a good price and the ad is more than a couple hours old, I don't see anything wrong with that question.

The only time I don't ask that question is if it's a new ad, or the seller specifically puts on the ad that it will be deleted when the item is sold

If they ask about my item, and not bass, pedal, case, amp etc... I treat it as generic junk and bin it.

"Hello, is your item still available?"

"Item" or "It" or just "Still available" indicates a generic bogus reply, from what I've seen. Usually within a few hours of posting your "item" for sale: my advice is to use the "delete" button. I know I wouldn't answer a CL ad that way; if I'm interested in your bass, I would reply that I'm interested in the bass you offered. I've also found that if you respond to an "it" or "item" reply, the sales pitch about the check, courier, etc. ...follows. Those are spam replies, for anything of value, designed to separate you from your bass...and no $$$...rather a bounced method of payment...coming your way. In this case, it's "seller beware!"
