air-conditioner temperature, where do you set it?

Just fired up my AC yesterday for the 1st time. It was 88 in my house and I've got the AC set at 81. So far, so good. We'll see how it goes once summer really kicks in.

Before I got married I kept the temp at 82°F. My wife prefers cooler temps so we compromised and live in a freezer. I tell people that she keeps the a/c on 8°F in the bedroom, but only because it won't go to 4.

I had mine on 75 for years & then during a coolant refill the tech. put it on 74, so I just left it there.
Lately I've been seeing ads from a local heating & cooling contractor where they push 72:

I've been debating with myself in the evenings over turning down the temp, but at the same time I'd like to condition us to living at a temp that's economical

Once I suffered pneumonia in Thailand, because of the super-cold A/C at the office & the blazing temperatures outdoors in April (Thailand's Summer & Songkran festival time).

When I moved to the Land of Smiles the last ailment I thought I'd catch was pneumonia, since it's never really that cold, but our bodies adjust.

80. And PG&E still takes us to the cleaners every month from My to October.

73℉ according to the window A/C unit. In my opinion, the lower the better. I'm not much of a fan of heat.

I like our furnace thermostat set no higher than 67℉.

Hey MJ come on over to our house. We keep ours 68 in the day and 66 at night. Year round. So basically what extra we spend to cool in the summer we save on heating in the winter. Electric in summer, natural gas in winter.

I replaced our HVAC unit 18 months ago and I’m seeing greater efficiency. Just got the electric bill-$91 for last month. House is just under 2000 square feet on a single level and well insulated. I can handle $3 a day to be super comfortable. My wife, daughter and myself all prefer the house cooler. We’re lucky to agree on that at least .

I’ve been on work furlough since March 20. My daughter’s last day of 6th grade turned out to be March 13. Picked up her grades today-straight As K-6. They averaged year to date for the final, but she would have been good either way.

My wife is basically a stay at home but does some part time at my daughters school. It’s funny how we’ve been doing automatic social distancing without even trying. Meals are the only time we’re all in the same room together. My music room is in a separate section of the house so I can go down there without disturbing the girls too much.

Usually keep the AC around 72 or so on hotter 85-90+ degree days, most other times around 73-75. Depends on the humidity. We usually have high levels of humidity around here and in the warmer months either it's a sticky humid or a "tolerable" humid but either way it makes cold water bottles and cans of beer sweat instantly if you get my drift.

No one ever talks about this, but your thermostat number can be arbitrary. It depends on where it's mounted.
So 75 may be perfect in your house, but if the thermostat were mounted at a different location, it may read 72 or 79.
And the overall house temperature could actually be 72.

My house's setting is great at 80, but the actual temperature averaged in the home may be 75.....
Placement is everything.

Something to think about. BTW, I like it much cooler than my girlfriend does ...

I only run my AC 1-2 weeks a year. Western Oregon never gets that hot or that cold (for me anyway). This time of year most of my windows are open and it feels great.

72* is perfect for this 20yr old single level 2100 sq ft home but my A.C. unit has to work hard at it during the day and I've been told by several HVAC experts my original evaporator/condenser unit in the garage will need replacing. Estimates range from $1500-2000. Now I gotta put my Warwick/Ebmm dream bass on hold but at least I won't die from dehydration or melt from this smoldering, suffocating jungle humidity down here where the Gulf water temps can reach 82*.Gawd awful...but i'm not moving off the West coast of Fl although I will admit there have been times when I wished I needed a metal detector to find where I thought I parked my car.

Nz has ''heat pumps'' which is how everyone I know uses them, for heating, never cooling. You get 3 or 4 times the heating for your power compared to resistance heaters.

In summer we just open the windows.

I prefer it cooler, especially when sleeping. But in our 98 year old house, even with the AC on, there's different zones - 23C on the main floor (thermostat), 21C basement (consistent year-round), 25C second floor when it's pushing 30-35C outside (like the last few days). I spend a lot of time in the basement on hot days like we've been having. It's somewhat about controlling temperature, but also about reducing humidity. Between around 15C to 25C, we'll have the windows open. After 25C, it gets stuff (and its usually humid when its that hot).

@Killed_by_Death, I experienced the same when in Singapore about 18 months ago. Went from Canadian winter (COLD, -25C) to Singapore (HOT/HUMID, +35C); so, predictably, I ran my room's AC at full bore for the week that I was there...to the point that I had a pool of water just outside my room from the condensation. A few weeks after returning, I had a nasty case of pneumonia. Linked? Maybe, maybe not.

Geothermal?

We're on a natural gas HVAC - big central air furnace unit in the basement, big AC condenser outside, connected to central air. In a region where lows can hit -30C in the winter and +30C in the summer - a system like this is critical. On the hottest days, I wish I had more horsepower in my blower motor to push the cool air upstairs. In a 98 year old house, we have a lot of heat/cooling loss. Modern windows, R40 insulation in the attic, but not a stitch of insulation in the walls!

Also have two natural gas fireplaces in the house. Makes it nice and toasty on cooler days and don't have to run the furnace at all between 0C and 15C.
