King Crimson - Red

Amazingly diverse yet completely coherent. One of the best albums ever recorded and, sadly, the last studio album recorded with that lineup.

Well I dunno if there is such a thing as a perfect album, but for me the most accomplished one, from the lyrics to the instruments to the vocals is

It's funny how many different Rush albums people have placed up there...(of course, they've only done like 30 or something)...

I used to be a huge Rush Head....But I've not brought any of my collection to Australia

My least favorite Rush album was probably "Roll the Bones"...

My top 3 are probably:

Moving Pictures
Hemispheres
Grace Under Pressure

Completely different sounds on each...

Moving Pictures, IMO, just defines Rush as the amazing trio that they are...the songs are intricate, yet melodic...Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and YYZ are classics!

Hemispheres is a bit more of a "jam", the music isn't as clean (as was much of their earlier stuff), but the playing is masterful and "Spirit of the Radio" is just an amazing song, period!

Grace Under Pressure - Rush's first step into their more "modern" sound, IMO..."Distant Early Warning" sets the tone for this album...Rush's musical theatrics are maintained in this album...but there's something about the structures of the songs that is different....synth sounds, cleaner guitar sounds, and percussion is quite different, as well...

Man, you could do a 500 post thread about Rush's body of work alone.

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

You do realize your are in a bass forum, right?

I agree with MOP. It is my favorite cd of all time. Sitting in my parents garage listening to that as a 13 year old kid for the first time changed my life forever.

One that I'm surpised hasn't been mentioned is GNR - Appetite for Destruction. When I think of hard rock, that is the album that comes to my mind. It wasn't as polished as all that hair metal crap coming out at the time but wasn't the Metallica rip off that true metal was for the previous 5 years. It sat perfectly in between. There isn't a bad song on that album. If Axl wasn't...well Axl, we'd be talking about GNR like we talk about Metallica and ACDC.

Their other albums are great as well, of course, but these three in particular really stick out as complete gems.

It's a terrific underrated song on The Band's self-titled album with a lead vocal and great bassline by Danko. For shame.

Weather Report 8:30 and Black Market are killer. I also dig Mysterious Traveller. I have just about of of the weather report collection, they are great
I usually buy the entire collections for most artists I like. Zappa is taking some time, I only own about 40 of his work.

The Beatles, Stones, Traffic, Grateful Dead, Aerosmith, Manowar, David Bowie, Tommy Bolin, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, RHCP, and Steely Dan are some I own their collections. That only touches some, I just don't want to type it all. I usually like the entire cd. Very few songs I do not like. I really enjoyed reading this thread. A lot of memories and some really good music you listen to.

I have a few:

Seal's "Human Being". This has got to be one of the most overlooked album of the 90's. Fantastic production, beautiful songs, and really dark. I think people expect Seal to be happy and poppy, and he alienated alot of fans with this, even though it's his best work.

Nine Inch Nails' "The Fragile". I had never really been a fan of NIN until Trent gave me a copy of this. Another mis-understood album. Since then I've checked out some of his other work, and none of it really comes close to The Fragile in terms of sheer beauty and ambition.

Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain". Gil Evans and Miles at their best. If you don't have it, get it.

Sepultura's "Roots". Simply one of the best metal albums ever made. Distorted guitars + berimbaus = awesome.
