All amps sounds the same?

I think the crowd that promotes these kind of statements is also the same "artistic" crowd that (sometimes even actively!) shy away from learning the technical facts. Once you start explain ie the effect of coils (inductance) in a circuit, or sealed vs vented cabs, you get that deer in headlight stare, and they are suddenly uncapable of learning new things. So much for the open and creative mind of "artists". ;)

Why doesn't he just save a lot of money and get a Peavey Bandit instead then? I mean, it sounds the same as all these other amps, right?

Of course it's possible to find ONE setting on each individual amp that can make SOME amps sound very similar but this is completely irrelevant in real life situations unless you only ever use the tone you get from that ONE setting. Then there are lots of amps that will NEVER sound even remotely the same at ANY setting, and I'm not just talking about comparisons like Peavey Bandit vs Tweed Bassman. He should try the same with something like an Ampeg vs a Hiwatt. If he can make an Ampeg at ANY setting sound even remotely similar to a Hiwatt at ANY setting he must be cheating.

What has more impact on the tone, the amp or the cab? I guess you could find examples were either were true, but if you're just going for a basic clean-ish tone, I'd say the cab. Start getting into break-up and distortion territory and the greater differences probably go back to the heads.
