All Concrete Room help

The only place I will have to play and record in the new house is a room in the bassment that is all concrete.

What will this do to acoustics...

Any affordable ways to treat it.

Hanging curtains that cover the walls?
Lots of rugs?

Are the foam kits they sell really worth it?

Any other ideas?

Hanging some stuff like heavy moving blankets will tame high frequencies from bouncing all over, making things sound dead. It won't be very acoustically balanced though. Depends on how crazy you want to get obviously. I'd avoid the foam stuff... too expensive and not as effective as other, cheaper options.

You can make some acoustic panels (similar to these... http://www.gikacoustics.com/product_info.html#2) which will absorb a much wider frequency range for fairly cheap. Just need to find a place that sells Owens corning 703 (unfaced) insulation boards (seen people say they purchased 6 for as little as $65)... mount them to some 1/4" ply with some spray adhesive and cover with fabric stapled to the ply on the back. Hang them on the walls around your space.

There's a bunch of DIY acoustic stuff out there if you search around some of the pro audio/recording sites like gearslutz and tapeop.
