Hey guys, I'm not a DB guy at all, but went to see a friend's great newgrass band the other day. Indoors, everyone DI. I was dead center four rows back.
Anyway, he has a great bass player, but I literally could not hear any bottom. In fact had to watch his hands at times to make sure he was playing. He was.
What came through a lot was only the "mwaaaaahhh" and nothing else. Just a nasally mid-range. Mind you at times my buddy switches from mando to guitar so it was ALL mid-range instruments. Two guitars, banjo, and the midrangey bass. No warm bottom bed for the higher stuff to float on. While I'm not a fan of overpowering bass, I do like a big bottom.
So is this a thing, an aesthetic choice? Conscious, or maybe he just didn't know?
