All These Religion Threads...

Not open for further replies.
I hereby would like to announce the creation of BASS-CHURCH. You can wire 10% of your income to my Luxembourg bank account to become enlightened. Let's get this started quick so I can get a Benz and a Villa quickly before my 2008 income tax is due.. off you go, my lemmings... errr.. sheep. ;)

HA! good laad.

I would love to know how many of these religious bassist ask you about this! bet they are well excited!

This is where I'll gracefully bow out now, before the trolls come...but I will say this:

If you look at the factual history of the world, religion has been responsible for the VAST majority of all wars.

Please understand this....I am in NO WAY giving my personal opinion on religion or whether I think it's good or bad, just stating a simple fact. More people have died in the name of God than for any other reason.

We also need to understand that all of us agreed to the rules on this forum, so if the mod's have rules we need to abide by them, whether we agree with them or not.

How many of these religion threads are trying to convert people? I might be missing them, but I don't catch that in any of the threads.

I think that is a bogus reason for not wanting religous threads. We all have something that identifies us as a whole (bass players) but we all have something unique that separates us as well (sex, color, religion (or not), 4,5,6,etc..strings, fretted fretless, etc...).

essentially music itself is pretty much the same-chords and patterns vary, but other than that, it is the same. with that being said, I also don't see a need for "christian" threads or "non-christian", "athiest", or any other religion threads, because isn't it supposed to be about music? who cares if you go to church or not? It's the music that matters, not who you "serve". So let's talk about bass/music. Forget religion-it does not have a bearing on a musician's skills.

If there was a clapping hands icon, i'd post a few to this!

Why stop at just religion? Why not ban all Fodera Club threads or MTD club threads since most people cannot afford them? Let's only have threads talking about being a bass player. But wait, what if you play 5 strings, or even 6? What if you don't play pop music, but are a jazz guy?

The problem (while I understand your point), is where do you stop? If you are a not a religious person (or aethist) for that matter, stay away from those threads. If you go to the library and you don't want to look at a religous book, stay away from that section. That is a public place. But they have everything from racist issues, to religion, to sexuality. Where do we stop there? Most of us pay money to post here and I think as long as it stays respectful, we all have the right to post (and read what ever posts we want).

Sorry to disagree with you on this, but those are my opinions.

I hope you find the answer you are looking for from your thread.

Peace,
Chris

sorry, but this is a most ridiculous response...sheesh..

I can't even type a proper reply to this.
If I have to tell you, then you'll never understand. pay money to post what you want to?

I'd better get out now
bye!

I'm not religious, but I'm not offended by religious words or imagery. In the United States of America, we have freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. We have freedom OF speech and other forms of expression, not freedom FROM speech.

Telling religious people to keep their religion in private places is akin to telling a homosexual to keep his expressions of love in the closet. Neither scenario is right for the U.S.A.

I know this is a worldwide forum, and not everyone in the world has the same values, rights, or freedoms that I personally enjoy, but individual countries do not reliquish their liberties due to the fact that someone across the pond might be offended. A simple mind is easily offended, and if we were to try to avoid saying anything that might offend someone, we'd all have to just run around with duct tape over our mouths.

Lastly, to me, there is nothing more frightening than the supposedly open-minded, sex-drugs-and-rock-and-roll, creative, artistic crowd calling for censorship of ANY subject. You do not have a right to never be offended. Get over yourselves.

And now I am clapping. :)

In general, the users of this site do a very good job of maintaining civility. I like it very much for that reason. Having been raised by the maxim to never talk about politics and religion, I have wondered why bass 'clubs' continue to be posted in the Bassists sub-forum. It seems to me that these clubs, whether they be religious, gear bassed, ethnic, or whatever belong in the OT section, where it is easy to avoid them if one wishes.

For further reading, I suggest people look at the Irish Bassists Club to see how divisive these things can be.

I think the point here is to keep it in off-topic. What if I started a "Black Bassists Club" or a "Democrat Bassist Club"? It's all silly nonsense and it isn't relevant. Just because we have differences in who we are doesn't mean we have to put ourselves into categories of bass player. Nobody should start a "Bassists Who Hate Jesus Club" because it would be rightfully called offensive and removed, but it is also necessary to accept that some people are equally bothered and offended by religion in general.

This is what i mean, It's a public place man, Do you think muslims wanna see anything about christians?

So basically you are bashing on the Christian threads? There's an Atheist Club, its on thread number 2 if I am not mistaken. I'm sure there could easily be a Buddist or Muslim club, and probably a Jewish one as well.

From your "join date" you are relatively new here. Talkbass is a place for all bass players to come together and share. We talk about Bass, music, and all things related to those.

However, we also talk about everyday things and get to know the people who we share with on a regular basis.

I know many people have made lifelong friends from this site simply because it allowed them to meet another person with the same interests as themselves.

Bass is the reason that we gather, the other stuff forges friendships... and I think talkbass is better for it.

+1 Thank you.

Hey Chris

I'm not trying to be a jerk.

At least those clubs are "Bass related".

I never heard of bass or any other intrument that has caused wars, like Religion has.

You are not being a jerk at all. This is why we discuss these things.

Maybe I am not understanding correctly. What threads for example (links or posting titles would be helpful) are you speaking about. While I understand your comment about Fodera's and MTD's being bass related, a Christain Worhsip bassists club is also bass related. That is my main point of reference.

So, my disconnect with this thread message is that maybe I am ignorant of the threads you are talking about.

Sorry, you're asking me to never, ever bring up something that is inextricably linked with who I am. It'd be like me asking you to please never comment on your elbow because it's your hands that play bass, or don't talk about your low B or high C because I play a four-banger. It's like asking me to find a different way to breathe, to stop being me. It's like asking someone to stop playing their favorite form of music because it's not bass-centered enough, or simply because it sucks and I only want to hear about my favorite form of music.

What's more, a huge chunk of my bass playing goes on at a Christian church, which also happens to be the largest "audience" I play in front of. As a practical matter, my relationship with Christ affects how and what I play.

There's plenty of other reasons, but I want to review forum rules before I go posting them. Among multitudes of other ideas, Jesus taught respect for rules and authority, even ones we don't like.

What hasn't been mentioned yet (at least it hadn't been when I started this post) is that the reason for the Christian Praise/Worship threads is that there are a lot of bassists on here who play in church, and they share things that have happened during performance at church, and like to connect to each other as bassists AND Christians. It is, indeed, bass-related. You don't get keyboardists on here wanting to chime in.

If you don't want to see the thread pop up anytime someone posts to it, that's too bad - but at least you have the option of not clicking on it to read any of it. It's called freedom.

And from what I've read from the Atheists thread, it has almost NOTHING to do with bass playing - just a lot of whining about Christians.

Maybe THAT'S the thread for you. This seems to match the sentiments voiced over there rather well.

And oh yeah - IBTL.

"Telling religious people to keep their religion in private places is akin to telling a homosexual to keep his expressions of love in the closet."

no it's not.

A church is what i was calling the private place, or a religious web site, still not really private...

and c'mon TB,

Can you make a new main thread under the "amps, bassist, effects.." bit for religion, and thats where it stays? and after that, and ignore icon....

People DO find just having to see religion things offensive. just like you'd find it offensive all religion to be put in 1 place.

we've actually been discussing these topics in the moditorium, tbh.

i for one have always been sorta perplexed by the penchant for folks to make "clubs" on any topic. why come to a forum on the internet, intended to build a sense of community among its members, only to then join "clubs" whose only purpose is to seperate and alienate? as you can probably imagine, i'm not a fan of the whole "Club" fad that seems to hit every discussion forum on the web. seems ridiculous to me, but whatever. these clubs have never seemed overly detrimental in the past - folks are going to participate in what they want to participate - so they've been left alone, and will probably continue to be left alone.

as far as the topic of this thread, though, i agree. there is too much religious discussion going on in the bassists forum. anytime this kind of discussion goes on, it is inherently divisive, and as such is really counter to the mandate of talkbass. this has only been compounded by the particular direction the atheist club thread has taken, that has also contributed to make this forum something of a battleground.

one thing to remember, though : the p&w club was originally allowed to continue here because it was, ostensibly, focused on praise and worship bands and gigs, and they have certain elements to them that are unique, and not found in other gigs.

another thing to remember : the lobby allows for relgious discussion. the current crop of threads extant in the bassists forum may very well end up there.

still, we realize there are things that need to be addressed here, and we're going to address them.

any ideas or suggestions, please contact me or any of the bassists[bg] mods via pm, or post them in the suggestion box forum.

i'm going to close this thread only because i don't want this to turn into the same kind of flame war that we are trying to prevent.
