Its pots and jacks fixed straight to pcb that bust most often. Probably see more issue with PCB mount preamp valves, probably due to people swapping pre valves more often and pulling out the joints. PCB mounting still with a chassis connection for strength is good enough, since that is the issue, relying on pcb solder for structure.
That's my biggest teeth-grinder with the Ampeg SVT-7 Pro. That stupid input jack is mounted directly to the PCB. After a few years of plugging and unplugging, that thing just can't hold up. I've fixed my friend's and he's had it professionally fixed before and after me, and that damned thing just will not stay stuck to the board.
I vote rip it out and install a chassis mount, and wire it to the board properly. It's not the PCB's fault, it's the cheap way crap gets mounted to it that wrecks reliability.
Power tubes on PCB's is not the best idea IMO either <snip>
I'm personally of the opinion that everything the user will mess with should not be PC mounted... but that transformers need to have the correct form factor and be well supported, structurally, if soldered to a board.
Tubes, IMO, even preamp tubes, shouldn't ever be PC mounted. People will tube roll and cork sniff 'til the cows come home, which means the PCB will suffer stresses they're just not made for. Chassis-mounts for the sockets, for the win.
I'm the same way with all jacks and pots. If they're PC mounted they're asking to get jostled just so. If they're wired, almost no amount of jostling will shake 'em loose. As far as all of the resistors and caps and (SS) diodes and such, stick 'em to a board all day. The average user does not need to poke around with them at all.
But I'm anal when it comes to my wiring. I don't even like to see exposed solder joints. Shrink-tube them things.
