Nope, I have yet to break one in two years and it still has the original strings on it.

Very weird for the first week but then it starts to feel perfectly natural as you get used to it. The only problem is if you don't get your fingers in just the right spot in between the frets it will produce a farting noise. But that stops happening once you get used to itl

I have never used talcum powder and I don't see where it would help.

Buy one from Amazon and try it. If you don't like it then return it and tell them you did not like it. All it will cost you is shipping it back if it doesn't work for you. Personally I never touch my Hofner since I got the Uke bass two years ago.
