Alternative to a Barefaced 2X12?

For the record, I have owned a Compact and it is quite a cool little cab. Of course to achieve the portability of it and low weight, there are compromises. The Compact is not going to sound like a fEARful 15/6 but that is not what it is designed to do. The wood is very thin... 3/8ths I think. I also recall hearing complaints a year or so ago about the duratex style finish. People were saying it has a DIY / homemade feel to it and not as professional as other builders such as Berg, Epifani etc. Having owned it I can see how they would say that, but personally I thought it was well built and the finish coating seemed quite tough and sturdy.

I tried an early Compact, and it was super light, and I wasn't using the easiest amp to EQ (Ampeg Pro 3) but I was boosting the mids and not hearing myself. A LOT of low end, but it didnt cut. Now, if things really have come on and the new finish is as good as the spray on Berg AE line, or the EAD (another UK cab maker) cabs, and I can get my tone, then yeah, i'd give it another shot. Things change...not sure what model would suit me but Im a perfectionist so it would have to tick all the boxes.

As much as clear PA type bass cabs are popular, I see no problem with just a high end 'bass guitar' designed cab that is suitable for bass, regardless of number of strings, etc. Eg, Bergantino.

For me, its not just about weight.

Wow. That certainly is not my experience as I pretty much did the opposite, cut the mids and boosted the lows. I found the high mids in the Compact, using the 3015 nonLF, very present. I don't remember having a problem cutting thru the mix but I was using that cab with a three piece rockabillly style group playing smaller places. Big places I would bring my LDS 15/6, which I owned at the time.

I must say, I was shocked. I thought it would have more mid definition from the reviews.

Ampeg SVT3!!!

If it wasn't for the fact we're so busy and there's such a backlog of orders I'd send you a cab just to stop you writing the same post over and over and over again on at least two forums. Do you not feel like you're in Groundhog Day? It's been about three years now!

Possibly three. It can't be THAT poor in the mids (the amp)!

If I get asked, i'll describe what happened with it with me, and that particular gig. I do admit I am happy to be proved wrong, but it can't JUST be the amp. It isn't that underpowered...

It is feeble into an 8 ohm load, especially when you're using a smaller cab which thus needs more power. Stick it into a more coloured and more midrangey 4x10" and it'll be fine. And if you don't like the tone of it to start with, as you've previously stated then you're on an absolute hiding to nothing plugging it into a Compact and expecting it to rock in an emo band! Anyway, I've emailed you because I'm soooooooo bored of this. :help: Email me back when you've found some sounds! :bassist:

The Super Twelve T was worth the wait for me, mine has had a lot of use and still looks as fresh as the day I got it, I cannot imagine a better cab for me, very easy to transport and sounds so good with my Streamliner 900 and PF500, go on, you know you want one ;)

No. You live in the UK - wait and get the Barefaced Super 12T.

NOTE: Fearful cabs are built by many different builders and therefore they’re not all built equally - However, all the Barefaced cabs are built by Barefaced and are consistent. Of course I’ll most likely be called evil, bashed, and reported for posting that. Anyway, if I were you - I’d write, call or even drive over to Barefaced and speak with Alex first before considering a cheaper speaker.

Just a note of clarification. :)

fEARfuls can be "Build your own" or buy from an Authorized Builder. The AB's do great work so no worries there.

As for your DIY skills... well that depends. I can't think of any that were dogs. :)

The alternative to Barefaced is almost always going to be more weight.

I live in America, took a big chance on these cabs, spent a considerable sum, and they are certainly worth the wait. They have also held up very well over about 240 gigs w/ just moving blankets for covers. They are the best sounding cabs I ever heard, and continue to amaze me no matter what challenge I throw at them (other cabs, impossible venues and wattages, coaxing every bit of SPL that I can out of them , crazy effects, screaming organ gigs). They are awesome. Now, I can only speak for the Big Baby's, but I'm sure the weight and construction issues apply to all his cabs.
