Alternatives to Cable Television

The only issue I would have with getting rid of cable is loosing my DVR. I'm curious if anyone has had success using their computer hard drive to record TV shows?

I'm lucky that my internet provider allows me access to online TV, and I can also use Hulu.com

Any shows that you needed to be subscribed to that channel for will be long gone, unless you subscribe to that channel independently, or find another way to get the content.

You can also get a lot of those shows by subscribing to Hulu.

I bought one of these Amazon.com: MXQ Android 4.4 TV Box: Electronics about a month ago. Just ordered a second one. Kodi installed. There's a ton of apps you can install and use. There's one great one call USTVNOW and for $30mo, you can get 28 or so Network and Cable channels in HD streamed live. There are plenty of others that have free content that is about a week behind. Genesis is dead so if you have it, delete it. Exodus is the new one to use. Plenty of TV shows, movies, music to be had. We are cutting the cable cord this month actually.

Also grabbed one of these. Amazon.com: Rii I8 Mini 2.4Ghz Wireless Touchpad Keyboard With Mouse For Pc, Pad, Xbox 360, Ps3, Google Android Tv Box, Htpc, Iptv (Black): Computers & Accessories Works great.

I'm watching a program on Exodus right now, from my Android telephone.

I considered getting a Minix (similar to MXQ), but since I can stream from my phone, I don't really need to.

10-4. I also have Kodi on my phone. Too bad my Amazon tablet doesn't have it available for install (different version of Android with no access to GooglePlay).

I am pretty happy with Netflix, Youtube and Fubotv. That covers everything I need: movies, series, music, videos and soccer.

I had NetFlix, but switched over to Amazon Prime, because with a student eMail address (.edu) I could get the membership for half price.
Now that I've got Kodi working, I sort of wish I'd never subscribed to Amazon Prime.
It is nice having two day delivery & some other perks, but TBH, I'm never in that much of a hurry & I don't read books online.
I should probably look into taking advantage of their online music catalog.
There are a bunch of Misfits songs loaded into the player, but I never get around to listening.

That's what I did. Didn't mean to say I 'literally' downloaded it. It's working great now.

Unless I'm at home watching TV, I don't watch much video; I seldom watch video on mobile devices. First, I don't have the time to sit and watch video during the day...I'm working. Second, I don't want to run down the battery when I may have something work-critical pop up late in the day. I don't always have a chance to charge the battery mid-day.

I do normally carry an Android tablet when I travel, so I rip movies from DVD onto the tablet to watch while on the airplane.

I don't know where people find the time to watch stuff on mobile devices unless they're on an airplane, public transportation, or watching during lunch. I've been a DirecTV subscriber for 20 years; I don't love them, but they have the NFL Sunday Ticket and that's my one "must-have."

I don't actually watch on my mobile screen, since I can cast it to my TV.
I almost have to, so I can read the menu choices, LOL.

I don't normally watch anything on my phone or tablet but I have. I like having the option. As for running down the battery....if you have an outlet or pc nearby, you can just plug in the charger cable. I have Kodi on my phone, tablet, laptop and it's running on my Android TV box.

Comcast/xFinity just sent me a notice that they're raising my rate yet again.

I've decided to do something about it this time.

As far as Cable goes, I need to use Comcast, because that's what everyone is on here.
I will continue to use them for internet.

I won't go to Dish or Direct TV. I worked for Dish for a hot minute, and those bastards will never see a dime of my money.

I consider getting one of those Clear TV antennas just for local broadcasts, but I doubt they're any good.
I have seen one used to good effect in a pub, but it was on the top of a hill.

I am also considering getting a Minix. It's a little Android box you hook up to your TV and it has apps you can watch television broadcasts for free.

I've already got Amazon Prime, so I can watch a lot of stuff online, but I will miss catching stuff On Demand the day after it's broadcast.

I guess I could still use Hulu for a lot of stuff that was only just broadcast.

I went to Roku and regional TV antennae. You'll be surprised how well an antennae works for the regional stuff. The one drawback is, you need a local daily for a TV guide or some such.

We only have internet now. I miss occasional channel surfing and randomly watching a flick I've seen a bazillion times but it's actually surprising how easy it was to fire the cable tv thingy. The SuperBowl came in beautifully through terrestrial broadcast.
