Am I bad With compression, did I buy a bad pedal... or both?

I recently purchased a Digitech Dual Band Bass squeeze and have been less than happy with the results. I've heard little of the infamous hiss everyone talks about... but the pedal allows for very little dynamicaly even with the compresson very low. Essentially, I'm wondering if I should learn to use the pedal correctly to even out my tone.. maybe give it a tad more punch (though that comes with musicman stingray territory)... or dump it because i did in fact buy a terrible pedal

I bought one when they were first released because I am a big fan of dual band compressors. I thought that with the dbx technology it would be fantastic. I sent the first one back to MF for an exchange because I thought that it was broken. The first one wasn’t broken… this is how they sound.

I'm constantly impressed by my Markbass Compressore Tube bass compressor pedal. Even GC stocks those. Try to get your hands on one for trial purposes. Most companies allow you to return if you're not satisfied. It's rugged, and holds up awesomely! To my surprise it also came standard with a JJ tube all hooked up!

Remember to search for what you want with your ears!!

Thanks for the input! I thought of the markbass compressor.. but the price is a bit much for me. I'm really using the compressor more to make my stingray a bit more subtle. I find that most styles outside of funk and heavier rock just sound too... harsh on that bass, I looked up the manual for the pedal (since i bought it used) and the settings are odd to say the least. but its working a bit better now.

Honestly, if you're going to use compression, get a good one. Doesn't have to be the most expensive one on the market, but there's a reason that when pro bassists use compression it's usually an expensive rackmounted compressor.
