Am I missing something about Fenders?

Well, I picked up an American J bass at a local shop. I played it and listened for that magic... :rollno::spit::scowl::eyebrow: It just flat blew. I'll stick with what I like for now and try another in a year or so.

Depending on their making / shipping / stocking conditions, they are hit and miss. NEVER make an opinion by trying only one.

I had many Fenders in my life. Some were dogs, others were fabulous.

Just or fun, just made a "pic-list" of my future Fender collection...

OK, now the comments.

#1 : '08 Am Dlx J V, tobacco sunburst, maple board
Already owned (it has been my only bass since June '08 so far). Definitely a keeper, as long as I need 5 strings (and I sometimes do).

#2 : '10 Am Dlx J 4, olympic white, rosewood board
Probably my future main bass. 4 strings (enough most of the times), and the ability to switch from active to passive.

#3 : '10 Am Std P 4, black, maple board
For rock'n'roll. THE standard of bass. To be mounted with rounds. That color combo is classic, but gorgeous (IMO).

#4 : '10 Hwy1 P, transparent wine
To be mounted with flats.

I'll have to think about #5 later, as soon as I figure out which fretless bass to get.

WHat about it flat blew?

Mainly, the tone. It lacked "growl" and was thin.

Thanks for all of the input. Like I said, I'll continue to try them out. I try to keep an open mind about these things.

I can sort off relate.I have tried many fenders and was impressed until I looked at the price tag. Then I found a Squire that sounded just as nice as a Fender Jazz.

But every Schector I have played I thought was just HORRIBLE.

Opposite results for me. Every fender I have held was uncomfortable and not very "wow" at all. But the Schecter C5 (Damien, Omen, Etc.) feels great, and once you ditch the factory strings, they sound fantastic.

I just tried a couple of Fender Jazz basses recently, MIA 60's, MIJ special and MIM. They are not like what I'd expect from the most sought after brand. The MIA 60's jbass felt a little chunky and uncomfortable. The pickups were noisy! The sound was OKAY but it gets lost easily in the mix. Probably a little setup and a better amp will make it better.
The MIJ jazz special was a fine playing bass but still felt bulky to me. Just isn't my type of playability. I wouldn't stand and hang that thing on my shoulders. It was a little heavy and the neck dives a little.
The MIM jazz is downright horrible. The pickups weren't even straight.

every bass sucks next to Fender!!!! the Best Bass ever. it takes a real man to enjoy it. you gotta be physically fit and mentally alert to play a Fender correctly. after you're done playing, you can toss it into a corner, hang your coat on it, and thank God that you own one! if it does nothing for you now, it will later. but you'll just regret not having gotten one sooner. when you let it make you a better player,... you'll just think to yourself,... "i shoulda known better"
remember, your idol doesn't play a Fender because he has to...

I'm afraid to say that, IMO of course, you should consider laughing a little less about what Pacojas stated, and maybe think a little more...

Not that Fender are the greatest basses of all (this a subjective opinion), but objective facts are present in what he said.

Fender don't sign endorsement contracts FOR ARTISTS TO play their instruments. They sign promotional contracts with artists who ALREADY play their instruments. This makes a big difference about the reasons why <type name of bassist here> plays <type brand of bass here>.

Even the Artist series at Fender (except maybe Stu Hamm, Roscoe Beck & Steve Bailey) are put into the market BASED ON what the artists' basses have become (schematically mojo).

Finally, if your "am I missing something about Fender ?" thread has been opened with the only purpose of doing one more Fender-bashing area, better close it.

I think we'll end on this positive idea- this is a very common subject and we're starting to get overblown statements on both sides of the Fender like/dislike coin, so we'll close this while there's mostly good sentiment in it.
