Am I P or J Person?

I am a dyed in the wool PBass guy

I am a flats player

I got a 67 Jazz Bass (just for kicks and a “back-up” to my P) and it came out of restoration with rounds

Put flats on it and immediately went back to the rounds it came with

It’s now my favorite bass, except on the days I like my Precision more

So, “both”?

It’s pretty common to play those basses differently, because they’re such different animals. The P sound is so full that i think instinctively most players don’t play “busy” bass lines on it because it would be overkill. Which would probably be why you play the Jazz style more creatively as you said, because it doesn’t take up as much sonic space-even if you aren’t consiously doing it, it’s amazing what our minds can do subconsciously. So really it becomes a matter of your needs for the songs you play. If you want the flexibility of having both options, keep both. If you really like the freedom the Jazz style gives you and want that to be your style, go with that. I’m struggling with this right now too actually. I have American Standards of both, but most of the time i pickup the J, which makes me wonder why i have so much invested in a P. But so far i’ve kept it around because A) there’s times where the P is the right fit for the song, and B) my tastes change fairly regularly, so i know if i got rid of it, in a year i’ll probably change my mind and want another P!

Nope it's a Fender Blacktop Jazz with a few mods by me...

Didn't saw the bridge pick up before, pardon! Those are beautiful basses, I almost got an Aerodyne or a Blacktop back then, but choose 70's RI MIJ P instead.

Why does it have to be either or, and why limit yourself to those 2 basses.
You might find out like me that you prefer different basses.

I many types of basses, but it's always a J or P for me (it's not always Fender tho, as I choose Sire than an MIM)

When these questions arise, I think it's always best to own both.

Yeah, I own both, love both. Just want to know my nature for my next purchase lol.

I love your explanation! I get it now, that's why I play more creative with a J. But, really, how it's possible? Just playing different bass made very different playing styles. I think I'm going to keep them both. But, maybe for the next purchase I need to made decision to save money. So, J or P?
