A "samosely" (Ukrainian for "self-settler") living in Poliske within the Zone of Alienation surrounding Chernobyl.

Interesting composition. The gentleman appears to be leaving the area in a bit of a struggle (leaning forward and pulling his bottle cart). Being placed close to the edge of the frame and facing outward (as opposed to into the frame) gives one a sense he is leaving the frame and this in turn tends to pull our eye out of the frame (along with him).
Juxtaposed is the road which leads the eye into the scene and toward a rather bleak area of the unknown. All along, nondescript, gray stone buildings appear abandoned and cold.
And cold... the man is wearing a rather heavy coat with what appears to be fur lining further giving the impression that the weather is in league with the catastrophe that has befallen the place.
Upon first glance, one might get the impression of unending doom for this small parcel of the 1000 mile stretch of land surrounding Chernobyl, but hope springs eternal. Leaves on the ground means they were once on the trees and green in the underlying brush means life continues some 30 years after the disaster.
