THis is a picture of the worlds first hydrogen bomb, Ivy Mike, in 1952 at Entiwtok Atoll which was housed in a building becasue it was so large. The detonation was coordinated through a flagship offshore; hence the antenna for radio and tv cameras.
The big vertical metal thing is a dewar flask holding the deuterium isotope of liquid hydrogen at near absolute zero plus the device . The pipes coming off the flask are light pipes to transmit data before the structure is vaporized.
This is a picture from the first device at Bikini Atoll, "Bravo Mike" or "Castle Bravo 1954. The dewar is gone and the device is a lot smaller as they have figured how to use Lithium deuteride instead of liquid deuterium for fusion fuel. Unfortunately, they used about 2.5x times as much fuel as necessary as they didnt realize the "inactive" Li-7 converted over to fusionable Li-6 under neutron bombardment , increasing the yeield significantly. This resulted in a much larger yield and redioactive contamination of the atoll, the surrounding ocean and a japanese fishing vessel. At that time, they used large amounts of uranium as the "tamper" to boost the fusion stage, which made it a very large dirty bomb.
The eight pipes at the right end (1) sent information about the detonation of the primary. Two in the middle (2) marked the time when X-rays from the primary reached the radiation channel around the secondary. The last two pipes (3) noted the time radiation reached the far end of the radiation channel, the difference between (2) and (3) being the radiation transit time for the channel. In hydrogen bombs, synchronization of the stages is critical to high yield.
In the lower right you can see the causeway which supports the light pipes that convey detonation data down to the data bunker about 7500 feet away. Due to the higher yield, the unmanned data bunker was destroyed on this detonation.
