Hmm, Google shows it IS real, the guy ducked back inside just in time. Amazing-- it appeared to be photoshopped. I stand corrected!

It is real and it seems to be a man operated light house, there is a video where they show the moment the next shift people arrives and the other leave. Pretty amazing stuff. They arrive on a boat and climb up a wire to the lighthouse, and all the time the sea is just like you see it on the picture.

Edit: it's not the same lighthouse but still pretty cool:

Incredible stuff, where to begin. First, those guys are braver than me. Next, hard to imagine how those structures take that pounding. Last, even harder to imagine how they built them in the first place. Brutal stuff. Sure the weather isn't always that bad but still.

If I recall correctly, it was taken in the early 50's at the Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific to see what a nuke would do to a navy fleet. Thus, after the test, some marketing guy came up with the Bikini style swimsuit name and the name has stuck ever sense. I guess you can say both Nukes and Bikinis are hot.

PBS just had a 2 hour show about the nuclear arms race. It was utterly fascinating and the story behind this picture was so effing bizarre I wouldn't have believed it on any other network.

At first glance I thought it was some kind of hairless non-human primate. But realizing it is indeed human it bummed my day. I feel so sad for that person.
