Still watching but he basically said he got into the game kinda randomly, then enjoyed doing the demo thing at first. Now he's getting called a shill and he's unhappy with some other attacks on other reviewers (like Loopop). He indicates he's been hacked, doxed, and contacted at home over his videos.
And he thinks we all care about his problems enough to make a video telling us all about it, right?
I guess part of being an "internet personality" and an "influencer" is that you can't resist going online to tell legions of strangers all about your personal life and issues.
Okay, maybe I'm being harsh? Maybe I get too much enjoyment reading ugly's rants against synthfluenza?
He made the video to explain why he’s quitting the gear demo business. He said he has a few reverb pedal demos completed and to be released shortly, but after that he’s done.
If what he’s saying is true about being doxed and hacked and contacted at home over his gear demos, then yeah you’re being too harsh. It’s probably a risk associated with being a public figure of any kind, and not particularly unique to his gear reviews. Still, he hasn’t done anything deserving of that level of harassment than I’m aware of.
The good news is there are still plenty of reviewers and demo people out there and he even mentions that. He just reached his threshold for headaches and is announcing his departure.
BTW, if you haven’t seen it there seems to be a fair amount of anger with Polyend over their recent Play+ announcement coming so soon after the original Play was released. Lots of users feel cheated and are venting their frustrations online. I think this piles on the fast evolution of the Tracker Mini from the Tracker. Lots of folks think this should’ve been a firmware upgrade and that they got suckered paying full price for the Play particularly since the MSRP for the Play got dropped, which guts the aftermarket for flipping them. I feel a bit of that because I bought my Medusa when used prices were around $1,000 then they dropped the new price to well below $1,000. Customers are feeling cheated, and Ben’s connection to Polyend over the years probably made him a lightning rod.

I understand the market value evaporated, but is it at least useful as a tool? Or, do you think it just isn't a good fit for you and has no market value?

I gotta confess, the irony of a video gear reviewer making a "I'm Done With Gear Reviews" video was not lost on me.
But getting doxed, hacked, etc.? That is seriously effed up. People need to get a life...even more than synthfluencers need to get a life.
I guess if I had the patience to watch the video I would've been sympathetic but I didn't get that far. Doxxers and hackers are lowlife dirtbags no question, and while influencers bother me as a concept, as individuals I assume they are mostly decent people.
I’ve watched some of Jordan’s non-gear videos. He’s quite smart and creative. The online harassment is totally undeserved for sure. I am curious if there is gamergate crossover in the behaviour.
As for Polyend, I feel like the new thing is just the apotheosis of a trend that’s been brewing for awhile. It is starting to seem like every piece of music hardware that isn’t a V2 is potentially a V1 now. And some gear with software is spending years in what is essentially a public beta. It is incredibly wasteful. And I feel like I’ve been had enough to be very sceptical now.

It’s pretty impressive that Elektron has kept their devices seemingly consistent over the years. They have added new product lines at different price points without gutting the market for their flagships.
I was pretty grumpy about the Polyend Medusa dropping in price after I bought one, but I did come around to thinking that - I bought what I wanted when I wanted it at the price asked, and it served its function as a tool, not an investment, and it still functions as that tool.
I get that there are some people who get screwed over (like @steubig) buying a product to check it out only to have the used market fall out during the trial period, but I’d bet that number is relatively small compared to total customers. Thats not to say this type of thing won’t erode the goodwill of a company.

That's where the public beta thing comes in though. If the product actually does what it promises to do, then yes, you're buying it for what it does. But often that's not the case in the first couple years of a product's life now. The sales are essentially funding the last leg of R&D. Edit to add: and the fact that announcements like the Poly+ thing can happen at any time means there is higher risk in "just trying it out."

Some companies are better about that last stage of R&D phase than others. The Torso sequencer has been out in the wild for a bit and it seems like the hardware and price point have remained stable, and all the upgrades have been firmware releases. The Zoia has come a long way too. It had a few hardware revisions but those could be added to older models with relative ease and the firmware updates have kept coming. There’s no Zoia+ silliness.
The Play did come out in the wake of the global conditions of Covid. I’m sure supply chains were still an issue and Polyend might’ve been at a point where they felt they had to release what they had at that time in the condition it was in. That doesn’t take the sting away. The company made a business decision and they’re seeing how the market responds.

I like how Moog handled the Mother 32, after a few years they released a free firmware upgrade that made a good piece of gear even better, didn't waste anything and didn't cost the user anything other than the time it took to download it and install it. I'm worried about the future of the Moog brand.
Some of the best research and development of hardware and software is the MicroFreak being the firmware “beta” instrument that tests a lot of firmware found on the higher end models for Arturia.

I don't need it at all, but it looks like a lot of fun. Tempted to grab it just for giggles, but then, I did that with the Model:Cycles and didn't end up keeping it that long.
On the other hand, it's a sampler and I could probably find more uses for it because of that. Hmmm.
I'm curious what else winds up being in this series...
There’s way better for the $ on the market for a hardware sampler.
Unless you like having a max of 64 megs of total memory and a 90$ carrying bag.
