bandcamp: i barely have time to listen to the compact discs that colleagues give me. (cases in point: a friend gave me a disc at least 15 years ago and i'm just now getting to it, and there are plenty of people on this thread who deserve a really good listen {apologies for being a slug].)

dunno how you all have time to listen to all this stuff.

not sure of what @ugly_bassplayer is talking about. is it a new wrinkle from the second sale of bandcamp?

last: anyone heard of or have experience with ampwall?

nothing special, just the simple concept of buying ether……buying essentially nothing.
except voluntary support for artists
i guess im tired and need sleep and or coffee

I'm fine with voluntarily supporting artists for now. Sounds good to me. I still spend way less on music than I did before streaming so why not spread the love around?

But I agree the system is broken. Also the Bandcamp app is by design (Apple's) inferior on iOS devices, which is annoying. But they could do some sprucing up themselves. I do worry about their longevity though now that they are owned by others.

Hmm... I just buy from the website and download the MP3s, I didn't even know they had an app.

I keep my music library on my PC and phone, about 80GB. There's also an archive of stuff I'm unlikely to care about listening to again, but a lot of that is older ripped CDs.

To me MP3s are a better value proposition than CDs -- not just cheaper per album for the most part, but they don't get damaged, don't take up storage space, don't get stolen out of my car, and I don't have to fumble with them. And I don't need an active internet connection or a specific app; MP3 is probably the most compatible format that exists.

It's a lot to listen to, but I listen while working, while driving, while falling asleep, sometimes while reading, while exercising (though admittedly that last bit is rarer than it should be). I've made attempts to get a bit pickier with my music purchasing, but then I discover stuff I really like.

I don't particularly have any other expensive hobbies (other than music gear and I try to keep that in check since my needs are really well covered). I don't have kids or debts, even the mortgage is paid off now. I don't even have any subscriptions or cable TV. I get most of my books from the library when I can and only buy things to support a few specific favorite authors. So my Bandcamp habit isn't a problem for me...

I am with you on this…

I have option paralysis - my iPhone Apple Music list is just insanely ginormous cos I never delete anything… I kind of rely on my favourites random playlist it generates for me every week but then that’s dominated by my 90’s nu metal / alt rock stuff with a twinge of progressive metalcore from later decades…
(Mainly from what my covers band is doing that I listen to a few times to get it right )
I mean the alt rock, 80’s rock and metal, the ambient synth stuff, rarely get a look in unless I remember or it comes up but there’s bands I added a year or two ago I can’t even remember their name
I’ll attach my random made for you list… problem is I’ll actually listen to all these on the little time I have on the train and then week over… and it reinforces the playlist artists / genres again haha

String experiments this weekend.
BEAD piccolo set on my Nordy Acinonyx. The set started on my F Bass Deluxe but I over tightened the high string and popped it. So far I’m enjoying this baritone piccolo tuning.

EADGC set on the F Bass Deluxe. Not sure I like the sound of these particular strings but I’m enjoying the higher extended range and it gives me a reason to grab the Deluxe over the Standard. I’m really liking the standard and having a hard time playing anything else these days.

I have some of my dad's records that date back to the 50s, plus a 78 rpm shellac that's been in the family for a long time, which was recorded in 1915. In recent years I've acquired a 1915 Victrola phonograph and a handful of 78s, but those are new to me so they don't count I guess.

My vinyl collection is limited and I’ve got nothing to play it on. I used to have my mom’s record player available to me but that’s been trashed. The only things I’m holding are probably not in great shape but they are:

Dang.

I have lost a bunch of cassettes and maybe a dozen vinyl records. Maybe 300-400 CDs at one point, sold or trashed a bunch of them and got it down to a couple hundred in binders, and then ripped them.

Yeah I get that
I’m at about 2000 cd collection.
I swore off vinyl because that would have made me homeless.
I don’t have anything to read them except for my computer.
I’ve been wanting some cool set up to listen to music without headphones for a while, unfortunately I haven’t been able to make that investment.

If it’s off your computer, decent speakers are now quite affordable. I think music enjoyment is as important as gear acquisition.

Thanks to buying used records, I have 50 year old records that I’ve owned for like 35 years. Also inherited a 1928 Orthophonic Victrola some years back. Shellac from flea market and needles from…Amazon.

Probably a few hundred CDs, all in binders and ripped to computer.

Ableton Move is obviously targeted at someone who is not me.

I use Bose Companion computer speakers for my laptop in my living room. My model is no longer available but there is a more modern version of the Companion series out there, and I think they are affordable (uncommon for Bose stuff). Mine sound great, I wish I could get another pair exactly like them.

Sadly, no. I bought a pair of Phase Technology 6T tower speakers in 1999 and I still love them. But that company is long out of business. My honest advice is to take some music you go love and audition a bunch (and pay attention to the room, eg if it has carpet and yours doesn't).

Haven't contributed in a while, but read every post! Still haven't fired up any synths in a long time, and even playing bass has been on and off. Busy, but main thing is that my cat Mysti got spayed on Thursday! So keeping an eye on her - the night after the spay my wife and I took turns staying up with her. She didn't sleep for 12 hours, just sat there with a far off look in her dilated eyes. Fortunately she was ok, my wife figured out a way to put a tea-towel around her neck rather than the crazy Elizabethan collar they gave us (which she insisted on slamming into things trying to get it off - very metal if you ask me). Last night was a return to normalcy, with her sleeping in bed with us throughout the night - despite a ruckus outside which may have been two male deer in a showdown!

But I finally have something ambient/post-rock/etc. to share:



Tangerine Dream is credited on the second track (which is how I discovered this - it is the #1 track on Tangerine Dream's Spotify page lol) though the album description credits just Thorsten Quaesching, Edgar Froese's disciple. Good enough for me - it's pretty cool, ranges from death metal/Cookie Monster vocals to Berlin School sequencing to Mellotron flute stuff in the second track.

Re: vinyl/CD collections - I have a bunch of CDs, used to have a bunch more as well as vinyl that I collected starting in 1982 when my family moved to Tokyo (I was 11, soon to be 12), but gave up 90% of in 2002 when my folks died and I sold off our home of 30 years. I am very fortunate to have lived in the same place this past 15 years and have accumulated a bunch of stuff - my wife hates it! (the collecting part) But I feel very fortunate to be able to listen to stuff without having to buy it - I remember being at the record store debating whether or not an album was worth it - picked up some gems and also many duds...
