Right you are....but I was more along the lines of hardware samplers that are "trending" and fetching prices that are imo a bit steep.

Especially with the outdated memory cards and etc...

I'm a huge hip hop fanatic but the trend of lo-fi beats is so hipster it drove the Roland sp market up real bad. Even the smart media cards are selling for 20$ a piece for 64mb. Puke ta cu lar

Tell me about it. Between the increase in prices of second-hand gear and the poor peso/USD exchange rate, stuff costs 2x to 3x what it used to cost ten years ago. And I'm not talking about the vintage craze, but the stuff you can buy new. This is partly why I can no longer afford high-end synths, and why I haven't been able to finish my modular system.

Re: Elektron. I like their early gear. I missed out on the SID Station but I have an old Machinedrum UW that has been essential and a Monomachine, and I have always thought that the next logical step would be the Octatrack; and for some reason, their analog gear doesn't interest me as much. However, I just haven't felt motivated enough to buy an Octa and I just don't have time to learn a complex machine these days. Maybe I'll finally grab one for xmas.

Tell me about it....just updating my Ableton to version 10 is triple the price of the transition from 8 to 9. I've been using Ableton for about 10 years legally. I was so peeved I sent an email to customer service about it. They couldn't care less..... surprised I'm am not.

To add insult they sent an email to all users that live 9 won't work on almost all up to date OS systems. Apple and windows.

I had a period around 2005-2007 when I really though I could use mostly software... spent several hundred on DAW updates, plugins, etc. It's mostly useless now, and I would have to pay another several hundred to upgrade to working versions of those plugins that are still supported (most aren't). I used my 2005 computer for as long as I could (nearly 10 years) and then decided to go with a hardware recorder instead of a new DAW.

i guess this tells us that bass guitars are a better deal and have a longer shelf life.

in terms of more expensive . . . that moog in the ad above cost about $3,600 in today's money. looks like one oscillator. no memory. for about the same money today you could get a sequential prophet x or walfdorf quantum (give or take). both of which have many more oscillators, onboard effects, memory and are arguably capable of more varied and interesting sounds. hell a used blofeld can be cheaper than 795 in today's dollars.

some of this stuff seems cheaper . . . especially if you get something for the long haul.

Indeed....my bass' don't need software or license upgrades. At least that is good news.

I love my Octatrack, but the learning curve is real. Might be easier because you have two Elektron machines already.
Modular is a whole other world of pain! Check out the used prices of Cwejman or MacBeth modules, which as fate would have it are two of my favorites :/
